Grace Lawry - Grace Lawry Newsletter Interview
08 Jun 2008 // An interview by Shade
What is the best gig/event you have ever performed at, and why?
I would probably have to say Tealight Acoustics in June 2006 when Jessica Something Jewish (USA) and Alps (Aus) played. Most awkward night ever! Everyone was expecting an acoustic show, there was low lighting, candles, coffee... and both the acts ended up being electronica and, well, alternative. The sole member of Jessica Something Jewish was also slightly drunk and decided to sit on me for part of his performance. Probably not the best gig I've played, but certainly one of the most memorable.
What is your favourite NZ venue?
Cityside Baptist! First home of Tealight Acoustics, many fond memories.
What can we expect to see from you over the next year?
I'm doing a mini tour of Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga and Wellington in June, and I am releasing an album in September, recording for which is also due to start in June. I'm hoping to play a few shows in Australia later on in the year too.
What other NZ musicians or bands would you like to see more of, and why?
Sam McCarthy (Goodnight Nurse, CapGunHero) because I think he is seriously one of the most talented people I have ever met. He also produced my first EP, titled 'The Greatest Of These'. That kid is going places.
If you could, what rumour would you start about yourself?
That I was really Japanese.
What advice would you like to give to other aspiring musicians?
Work hard and enjoy yourself. It may sound cliche but that's probably because it's the truth.
