Wellington dance-punk trio Hollywoodfun Downstairs have been relentless in their rise to the top of the capital’s rock scene.
The boisterous concoction of trampling beats, spooky guitar licks and thunderous bass has been a huge hit across the North Island, attracting both a growing number of fans and noise control complaints.
The band's five track disc debut So Post Modern kicks off with the single Bangkok Hilton, which has had consistent airplay on both bFM and Radio Active.
With dynamism and tempo sadly missing from a retro-grunge obsessed decade for New Zealand rock, Bangkok Hilton provides a taste of the swarming sounds and twisting energy to follow.
Next up is Colours of Soho, which “slaps you in the face” just as the opening lyrics suggest. Anxious yet decisively groovy rhythms build the verses while razor sharp riffs saw through to construct an impressive track.
The remaining three songs; Looking Like Jarvis, New Town Killers and Eerie Tales continue in the spirit of what is a truly exciting debut release.
HFD have created something very unique and the range of dynamics used is proof of the effort gone in to perfecting their sound.
Hollywoodfun Downstairs was founded in London, England in the early months of 2008, ending up in Wellington in 2011.
