Aside from having one of those names that makes fans wary of mispronounciation, Kaushun (pronounced as ‘Caution’), is a electronic music producer based in Auckland, but originally from Leeds in the United Kingdom.
Tonight is the producers second album and a decent mix of run-of-the-mill dance/club beats, interesting electronica soundscapes and some high tempo pieces that wouldn’t go amiss on the soundtrack to a futuristic David Fincher film.
The opening Welcome Back has a lot of aspects that remind me of Daft Punk's soundtrack for the Tron Legacy film. The slow start is offbeat and creates a sense of urgency, building up until the break down takes a slightly more robotic and playful turn that still maintains a slight sense of foreboding.
The flow into Order is smooth and maintains that same slightly ‘off kilter’ edge before the piece builds into a dubby, almost antagonising break with some high pitched synth and thrashy beats.
A lot of this material would not feel out of place on the soundtrack to a video game, but there are also a couple of bangers thrown in – the breakdown on Dynamite (featuring Rachel) is dance club fodder and as the first piece with vocals it creates a nice reprieve.
The title named song, Tonight, again feels Daft Punk-ish in the beginning but leads on to a trancy and refreshing breakdown - though the siren sounding synth begins to get a bit much after a while.
Konnectshun is my top pick from the collection.
