Katie Thompson has just released her second single from her upcoming album, Bittersweet. After reviewing the first single, I was intrigued by the potential of the album, which explored a more developed and introspective sound than her past material. The second release continues this exploration further into soulful and nostalgic territories.
The first single Alcohol and Pills was a cover, making it hard to judge what to expect from the upcoming album. I was hopeful for Thompson’s originals and was not disappointed - in fact, the new single I Was Once Your Everything far surpasses the previous release, raising the bar once again. The track is more cohesive, more evocative, and delivers more than a little heartbreak. This is a track to cry your pain away to; built with the kind of hurt that heals.
The instrumentation and performances on this track are beautifully suited to the lyrical content of the song, which conveys the experience of being blindsided by an unexpected betrayal and the dissolution of a romance. Crafted with a traditional structure, the track has a lovely spaciousness, with rising and falling intensity. The pedal steel in particular swoons with the listener. Thompson’s vocals are the powerhouse of this song. She delivers a heart-wrenching performance, delivered with confidence and soul. She is truly a pleasure to listen to, and it has been very satisfying to hear her voice less concealed than in the past. My one criticism here is a personal pet hate: too much reverb. On an already wet mix the intensity of the vocal reverb and delay steal intimacy from her performance. However, this is a small criticism on a stunning track.
The upcoming album Bittersweet appears to be aptly named, packing a solid dose of heart ache. I Was Once Your Everything has delivered a well-crafted song in a beautiful presentation. The song-writing displayed here suggest that this album will be one worth watching.
Look out for the full album to be released in September 2019.
