Venice Qin - EP Review: Dreamboy
Venice Qin is an Auckland based singer and Songwriter. Dreamboy is a four-song collection and is her first release.
There is more than a hint of the flavour of musical theatre running through these songs. They mostly love songs written from a first-person perspective, with the kind of melodic flair, instrumentation and dynamic shape that you might expect from songs that are part of a narrative structure. The songwriters who work in this area are noted for their craft, and that influence is clear in the skillful musical awareness that consistently comes through.
Fortunately, Venice Qin shows a deft touch with arranging- these days musicians are often limited to their own musical arranging skills using computer-based instruments, which for many expose a lack of experience apart from the melodic and harmonic construction Not so here, the instrumentations are supportive and the blend of timbres in each song belies a musical awareness and sensitivity. Qin is also a skilled vocalist. This comes through especially in the phrasing and dynamic shape to the melody lines - these are signs of musical awareness and experience that younger technically capable singers often lack.
All of these elements combine to lift Let Me Down into the realm of really effective Pop, in its broadest and most accessible sense, by using melodic strength, effective hooks, well thought out dynamic structure, and interesting timbres. The "me/you" lyrical content allows for a concern -free listening experience but avoids becoming saccharine-which is another trap for the less experienced.
Venice Qin has made an assertive and assured Pop statement with this release. The refreshing part is the lack of cynicism and intent for ‘marketplace placement’. For many, the reward of the Pop experience are songs that evoke that sense of joy by using strong melody, confident delivery and assured musical skill.

Inspired by artists such as King Princess and Dove Cameron, she mixes acoustic sounds with electronic ones, rock riffs with synth stabs. Her voice is a revelation, immensely powerful. This compelling combination makes her a force to be reckoned with, someone to certainly keep your eye on, as she captures the world around her.
