Chasing Titans - Album Review: Infinite Paradox

15 Apr 2024 // A review by Robbie Scott

Infinite Paradox, is the latest release from Auckland 3-piece Chasing Titans. The 10- track album makes this the second instalment following the release of their debut EP late 2022, when listening to the EP, this album becomes a story of evolution in the band's sound and presence.

Within seconds of playing the opening track Complete Submission, you’re pulled into an intense fast paced metal track, it’s intense and I love it! The lyrics are incredibly well-written, and duties are shared between Adrian Govender, and Sylvester Porizakova, with drummer Torrance Kam on drums and backing vocals, it’s a great mix!

With an average song length of 3:30, the album and songs flow tirelessly throughout the album, with soundscapes (When, Freya?, Inversion), making up the difference between tracks.

Cliffhanger, is track number 3, and a personal favourite of mine. Like a majority of the other tracks on Infinite Paradox, the full band gets to work straight away, resulting in an instant head bang. Vocal duties are shared again, and it’s a great blend to say the least. After listening to this track, it’s clear that well written lyrics are a key point with this band, matching the music that the band plays tightly.

Slowly, starts with a catching bass line, which after time builds into that fundamental heavy engaging tone we’ve learned to love this far in the album, it’s yet another well written track both lyrically, and musically, the drums ( as in all tracks so far), are stand out, and compliment the guitar and bass work. A special mention to Torrance Kam, for his fantastic drum work!

As the album draws to a close in the final two songs, I find myself enjoying this band a lot, I’d never heard of them until now, and I’m glad I did! Chasing Titans, show just what New Zealand metal is about, it’s well written and played , and it sticks with you, well after the CD has stopped!

If the amazing artwork on the cover doesn’t grab you (that’s a masterpiece on its own), then the music definitely will, and I’m excited to see what Chasing Titans create next! Another great kiwi metal band! Check them out if you haven’t already.

About Chasing Titans

Chasing Titans is an alternative metalcore band hailing from Auckland, New Zealand. Formed in 2018, this three-piece group made up of Adrian Govender (guitar/vocals), Sylvester Porizakova (bass/vocals), and Torrance Kam (drums/backing vocals) has been making waves in the local scene with their distinct and powerful amalgamation of metalcore, infused with elements of hip hop and electronica, coupled with emotionally charged and poignant lyrics/

The band released their self-titled debut EP in December 2022, which was met with an overwhelmingly positive reception. New Zealand music critic Kev Roland (Muzic.net.nz) said, “This certainly doesn’t sound like a debut as these guys are polished, tight and heavy,” while US label Moosic Entertainment called it “a requirement for you to put it in your playlist!”. All three singles from the EP, Cabin Fever, Vengeance, and New Depravity have charted and been featured on radio and media in the US, UK, Canada, France, Australia, and Mexico, with Cabin Fever achieving a peak position of number 3 on the Top 10 list on Valley FM 89.5 (Australia), garnering further acclaim for the band.

The rapid success of their EP on an international level propelled them to secure a remarkable deal with European metal label, Sliptrick Records, in June 2023. In February 2024 the band proudly announced their forthcoming debut album, Infinite Paradox, will be released via Sliptrick Records and the Dead Pulse record store on March 26th, 2024.
