Blue Train was originally formed in 1991 with sax player Chris Mason-Battley.
They performed a mix of Jazz & Blues and started writing original material. After hooking up with drummer Jason Orme & bass player Matt Gruebner, they released a self-funded, self-titled album in 1992 and so gained a following.
In mid-1994 Parachute Productions started their own recording label and invited Blue Train to be one of the first bands to join it. With guitarist Robbie Karena and newcomer Steve Sherriff on sax, they produced 'No Free Lunch' which won NZ Jazz Album of the Year in 1996.
Early 1998 saw the release of 'Never You Mind' which further refined their popular Jazz-Funk sound.
