The Dark Beaks feature the talents of guitar-pop-savant Andrew Jamieson. He’s been quietly accumulating a vast song library since the demise of Munky Kramp in the mid ‘90’s. In addition to vocals he plays guitar and coaxes all colours of sound from his collection of obscure vintage NZ-made valve amplifiers. Behind every creative genius and dreamer there needs to be a reliable and practical engine-room. Andrew Last (bass), and Ian Henderson (drums) keep it all real.
Dunedin is renowned for producing alternative guitar bands and musicians, also being the home of The Clean, The Chills, Verlaines, Straitjacket Fits, Snapper, The Great Unwashed, The Renderers, Sneaky Feelings, (some of) The Bats, David Kilgour, The Puddle, The 3Ds, Alistair Galbraith and many more. While there’s a fair bit of Dunedin (not to mention Christchurch, Wellington, Cambridge and Auckland) in the sound of The Dark Beaks they draw their influences from both near and far.
The Dark Beaks enjoyed a short life at the end of last century when two songs were released on Arc Cafe compilations. An early version of 'Roll Along' can be heard on Arc: Music of Dunedin (Arc Cafe 1998). 'Maribellu' can be heard on Arclife (Arc Cafe, 1999). Andrew re-started the band in 2004. An album (release February 2006 on Fishrider Records) was recorded during 2005.
A version of the album tune tune, 'Seal Was Unbroken', featured on the 2005 Radio One sampler CD. The Dark Beaks also recorded a 36-minute Live-to-Air performance at Radio One in Dunedin during September 2005. Nick Naq’s video for 'Dream About You' can be viewed on amplifier.co.nz.
