Shihad release their new album, FVEY (pronounced, Five Eyes), today, Friday, August 8.
The album, the ninth studio album from the band, was recorded in December last year at Auckland’s legendary York Street Studio with Killing Joke frontman, Jaz Coleman at the production helm.
When frontman Jon Toogood, drummer Tom Larkin, bass payer Karl Kippenberger and guitarist Phil Knight reconvened in Melbourne during the winter of 2013 for a lock down writing session it was a natural move to conjure up a brutal set of songs.
FVEY is a combination of the band’s 1993 debut, Churn and 1995 follow up Killjoy, with moments of seething intensity that recalls 2005's Love Is The New Hate. And with Coleman on board there's the primitive post punk graunch and groove of Killing Joke thrown in too.
But really, the album sounds unlike anything Shihad have done before, which is not bad for a band who have been around for 25 years.
"It wasn't our intention to recreate anything," says Larkin.
"I think on this album we've done a full circle where the band has found a method of working that we're all ridiculously excited about. It feels like a collective rebirth about how we go about things and what we're going to do. It's a return to something darker and heavier."
FVEY is released in a number of different formats – an 11-track standard album (available on CD and digitally); a limited CD only edition featuring the standard album and four bonus tracks; an iTunes exclusive version featuring the standard album, a bonus track and the Think You’re So Free music video; and a 180g double LP vinyl with 11 tracks.
Check out Shihad performing songs from FVEY in the last ever performance at York Street Studios as part of the NZ Herald Sundae Sessions.
FVEY is available from iTunes, JB Hi-Fi and Mighty Ape.
