Carb on Carb, Auckland’s
resident emotive-punk duo, are excited to release of their new single and
coffee-themed music video
Nicole’s Express (impacting 27th of
April), and announce pre-orders for their album
for ages, out Friday
4th May on Black Wire Records.
Nicole’s Express continues the album theme of growth and
resilience introduced by their first single
It’s Been a Rough Year.
The video follows the band - Nicole Gaffney (vocals, guitar) and James
Stutely (drums) - and friends (Wellington's
Prizegiving) on their
2017 Australian tour, documenting the first sip taken of every coffee. The
spacious and reflective opening riff sets the scene for the vulnerable first
line “not leaving my routine, I might break”. The track builds gradually
towards a resilient and cathartic finale with the inner-monologue-turned-sing-along
“don’t forget to breathe.”
Also available from today are pre-orders for the album itself; titled
for
ages, released May 4th. Working with emo heavyweight mix
engineer Chris Teti (The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer
Afraid To Die), Carb on Carb have crafted a cohesive, heart-on-sleeve
record. Nicole draws vocal inspiration from varied sources, with melodies and
delivery that encompass the passion of emo and the powerful softness of RnB.
Backed by her alternate-tuning full-strum guitar style, and James Stutely’sdistinctive drumming, the result is altogether energetic and memorable. The
album was recorded by Dylan Adams at his Coogee Beach studio in Sydney
and mastered by Dan Coutant in New York.
Carb on Carb will be playing shows around New Zealand in May, including
a one-night-only stripped back performance of the new album in full, with a
cellist. Their reputation for being a hard-working touring band precedes them;
in their relatively short lifespan they have already toured China, South East
Asia, the US (twice, including showcases at the prestigious CMJ and
Gainesville’s The Fest). They have made multiple runs across Australia
and New Zealand, headlining DIY festivals No Front Fences and SAD by,
as well as support tours with The Hotelier and Joyce Manor.
Nicole’s Express follows previous single
It’s Been a Rough
Year, released in February, winning support from Spotify, being
added to the Local Noise, Fresh Finds: Six Strings, Chords and
Cardigans, and Women of AU and NZ editorial playlists. It also
garnered rotation on SYN & 95bfm as well as spot plays on
alternative radio throughout Australia, NZ and the US. Weirdo Wastelandsummed it up “Carb on Carb have weaved this raw emotionality into a resolute
anthem…this is the kind of song that’s important to have these days. Listen to
it and tell me it doesn’t make you feel a little bit better about life as it is
for you currently.”
