Flip Grater - Flip Grater Newsletter Interview

11 Sep 2007 // An interview by Shade
Flip Grater is a Christchurch based singer/songwriter. Her style ranges from dirty indie-folk, to gentle introverted lullabies. In 2006 Flip toured the country, promoting her debut album 'Cage For A Song'. Traveling the length and breadth of the country in her trusty 1988 Lada Stationwagon, she sang for her supper in small towns and big cities, blagging accommodation, food and most importantly recipes along the way. For more information on this amazing concept, check out www.cookbooktour.com.

What is your greatest achievement?

Releasing my debut album felt like a huge acheivement. Any time you do something for the first time it's twice as much work because you're learning how to do it all. I have just released a book called The Cookbook Tour and that's a similar thing where I am learning as I go so it's really interesting and challenging. When I've put a lot of time and energy into a project, that's when it feels like an acheivement.

What do you think could be done to make NZ music even better?

More people going to gigs.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In five years I hope I'll be doing similar things to now. My ideal lifestyle includes work, play, family, travel, music, exercise and meditation, so I'm pretty close to having my perfect life now!

What is the best thing about making music?

Having people enjoy it.

What advice would you like to give to other aspiring musicians?

If you work hard and have a good attitude, you can do anything you want to do.

About Flip Grater

Paris-based New Zealand singer-songwriter Flip Grater has a penchant for sharing. Apart from memoirs and recipes, she pens highly personal, nostalgic and at times melancholic indie-folk songs.

Her new album, Pigalle pays homage to her inspirations and influences from both France and New Zealand, while maintaining her uniquely intimate sensibility.

A departure from her 3 previous acoustic albums, Pigalle reveals Grater’s grittier side. Written in Paris and recorded at Studio Pigalle, her French band includes trumpet, electric guitars, piano and chamberlain by French artist Babx and vocal backing from Poni Hoax’s Nicolas Ker.
