David Dallas - David Dallas Newsletter Interview

17 Aug 2009 // An interview by Shade
What is the best gig you have ever performed at, and why?

My showcase at SXSW 09 in Austin Texas. Because it was my first time performing to a hip hop audience in the U.S, and it was really validating to see people were into this music that i made in my room half a world away.

What is your favourite NZ venue?

I used to like the old Fu Bar when it was on Queen St. Had some memorable gigs there starting out.

What NZ musicians or bands would you like to see more of, and why?

Wouldn't mind seein more of Red Eye Society. The Electric Confectionaires are good, I'd like to see more of them too.

What is your most embarrassing on tour/gig moment?

I don't really have anything too bad. One thing that does bum me out that's happened to me a numerous times is gigs where I've gone on stage for a guest verse.. rapped the whole verse, thinkin I'm killin' it. Then come off stage and someone's told me "hey man, I don't think they turned your mic on ay" - wicked.

How do you describe your music?

Smooth, soulful, sincere

What can we expect to see from yourself over the next year?

My debut solo album 'Something Awesome' comes out on August 31st (tomorrow) and the video for my new single 'Big Time' has just come out. I'll be touring and releasing more singles to support that here, and I've got another secret project which I've started work on. That'll be choice. Check www.daviddallas.co.nz if you ever wanna know what I'm up to cause I like to talk.

What advice would you like to give to other aspiring musicians?

Remember that no-one owes you anything - not even their time, no matter how good you may think you are. Work at your craft so that when the moment comes that someone does take the time to hear you, your music is undeniable. It'll save you a lot of effort down the track.
