Danny McCrum - Danny McCrum Band Newsletter Interview

01 Mar 2010 // An interview by Shade
What can we expect to see from the Danny McCrum Band over the next year?

We're currently planning a tour, we're supporting Jimmy Barnes at The Powerstation in Auckland on April 6th and we will possibly be back in the studio very soon too.

What will your next release be?

Our second album 'Say What You Mean' only came out in October, so it's a bit too soon to say. Although we might release a couple of new singles later in the year.

How do you believe the Danny McCrum Band fits into the NZ music industry?

I'm not sure. We seem to have quite a unique sound, but then again we don't really compare ourselves to anyone else. We just enjoy making music and work hard at what we do. I guess we fit because we're in NZ, performing and recording here. If there was a particular sound or mindset we were supposed to adopt, I never received the letter.

How do you describe your music?

I call simply call us a rock band. Maybe funk/rock if I have to elaborate. We don't care about defining ourselves with the right phrase. For some reason some people have called us a blues band, but I can't figure out why. I guess these people have never heard real blues before. We've also had the odd person assume we're an Irish band because of the band name. As if people with Irish names could only possibly play Irish music! It's very strange. But we're a rock band through and through.

What inspired you to start the Danny McCrum Band?

Matt Harvey (bassist) and I were in a previous band together that wasn't going very well. Our drummer was causing us endless problems and the band was going nowhere. I was ready to leave and Matt came to me and suggested we make a new band, that we set it up properly, get good people involved, make sure it's fun and professional and basically give ourselves a clean slate. He was also the one who suggested the band name. Ever since the band has gone from strength to strength.

What is the best gig you have ever performed at, and why?

Supporting Eric Clapton at Vector was my favourite. It was fantastic to work beside Clapton and his band and the show went really well.

How do you keep in contact with your fans?

Same way as everyone else... through the many internet options of communication. The main ones are our website and facebook.
