Mercury Crowe - Mercury Crowe Newsletter Interview

21 Nov 2010 // An interview by Shade

What can we expect to see from Mercury Crowe over the next year?

We released our first music video for the single 'Kiss Me or Kill Me' on Friday 5th November, with another single baking in the oven for release next year. Summer is a great time for festivals and shows in New Zealand so we are definitely planning on touring throughout the country over summer and into NZ music month next May.

Who are your favourite NZ musicians/bands, and why?

There is a lot of NZ music coming out now that is definitely world class. Musicians we like that have had lots of commercial success (Midnight Youth, Gin Wigmore), and also bands that are really creative with a distinct NZ sound. Little Bushman is one of the most creative acts I have come across and are amazing every time I see them live.

What will Mercury Crowe’s next release be?

We are releasing another single and video early next year to follow up our first single 'Kiss Me or Kill Me'. It’s the perfect song for a late summer driving soundtrack. Stay tuned for the tune and its video in a few months.

How do you come up with your lyrics?

Similar to most artists, we generally write about life experiences. I always thought it’s not just what you are writing about, but how you want it to come across that is the most important thing. The new single for example is just written about a girl we met on tour, but the lyrics were come across in a really sexy rock n roll way to fit the vibe of the tune.

Who would you most like to support live?

Anyone who blows us away with wailing blues guitar, soulful vocals and a bass line so grooving it makes you want to be a drummer.

How do you describe Mercury Crowe’s music?

Our music is ‘classic blues rock’ in the most modern sense of the word. By that I mean we are inspired by classic rock/blues and pop artists whose songs are so well written that they have stood the test of time and people still love to listen to them.

What is the best part of being a musician?

Putting your heart and soul into a bunch of songs that have the ability to reach a lot of people in a really cool way. That, and having a mobile party van to go on tour in.

About Mercury Crowe

‘Set Your Mind to Fly’ - the new album from Wellington’s Mercury Crowe was released in May 2009 to over 600 eagerly awaiting fans in both Auckland and Wellington. Recorded mainly live over three days, the self-produced album sinks comfortably into a range of styles - spanning filthy blues riffs, Beatles-esque harmonies, story telling ballads and foot stomping rock. It also marks a new rough-edged sound for the Crowe who wanted to convey the energy and space of their live shows on the new album.

The nine-track album credits song-writing from all four band members and features long time collaborator Ed Zuccollo (Harbour City Electric) on Hammond Organ, and the phenomenal Lisa Tomlins (Fat Freddies Drop, Hollie Smith) singing backing vocals. It’s a big step forward from their debut e.p ‘Mercury Crowe’ (2007) and, while both were similarly produced, mixed and designed by the band themselves; it’s clear the year-and-a-half between was spent honing their craft from the stage. The result is nine well delivered, road tested, sing-able rock n roll songs.
