Luger Boa - Luger Boa Newsletter Interview

05 Jun 2011 // An interview by Shade

Thanks to Jimmy Christmas for answering these questions for muzic.net.nz:

What can we expect to see from Luger Boa over the next year?

We are ECSTATIC to be releasing our 2nd Album 'New Hot Nights' so will be celebrating wildly & continuously for the next 2 weeks at least. When the hangover wears off, we shall endeavour to earn several more by hitting the road and playing as much as we can over the coming months. The debonair Msr Johnny Lyon has been recruited to this end, and with his axe in hand he is unstoppable. The Boa ranks have been reinforced with rock n roll insanity. It's an exciting time. We have a national tour in the works, then will pack our bags for foreign climes, as it is well past time to take the Luger machine to the world!

How do you come up with your lyrics?

The lyrics for 'New Hot Nights' have been mostly inspired by many nocturnal observations on and around Aucklands notorious K'Rd. Watching from a doorway as the urban jungle throbs and pulsates is a great way to gather inspiration. The human zoo colliding in front of me created the idea for a loose concept of sorts, and the characters that inhabit the album were drawn from what I could see in the wee small hours....dark, twisted, sexual, excitable. You know what I mean.

How do you describe Luger Boa's music?

We are a Mutant Rock n Roll Outfit. This album seems to be much more comfortable in it's own skin than the last. The debut record 'Mutate Or Die' felt quite manic and crazed, which was fitting for the time, but I think 'New Hot Nights' has developed the real personality of Luger Boa - it's still deranged, but now we know just why and how. Luger guitar wielders Sam Lockley & Ryan Thomas have injected the recordings with tones previously unheard by human ears, bass creature Simon Nicholls plays perhaps the most pulsating rhythms imaginable, and wild southern beast Joe Mac has destroyed several drum kits on route to a flawless performance across the entire album. There are many moods and moments, all a bit twisted and guaranteed to be delicious.

What is your favourite NZ venue?

By far and away, the Christchurch Town Hall. We have had incredible experiences there. The room is large, warm and inviting, the acoustics incredible and perfect for large stacks and roaring amplification, and the crowds have always been unbelievable. Christchurch is a big part of the Luger story. Mind you, there are many exceptional places to play around this nubile young country of ours, and we look forward to hitting a whole bunch more on the album tour. Naturally most of the vibe comes from crowd themselves..I remember a certain night at The Royal in Palmerston North that shall forever live on in infamy...!

What is the best part of being a musician?

It's an arrested development of sorts! Traveling with your mates all over the place to experience strange and exciting occurrences, what could be better? We turn up devices real loud, strike pieces of wire with pieces of plastic, yell into microphones and get to spend wild sweaty nights with large groups of people. And sometimes we make music!

What rumour would you like to start about Luger Boa?

"Luger Boa's latest album 'New Hot Nights' will simultaneously expand and blow your mind, and a night out at a Luger Boa show will get you more action than you could possibly hope for" well, after all, the best rumours are grounded in the truth.....LBx

About Luger Boa

Following the decision by New Zealands garage rock behemoth The D4 to go on extended hiatus, vocalist and guitarist Jimmy Christmas retreated into the wilds of Auckland's Central City and began work on a strange new project. At a secret location deep in Kingsland, he surrounded himself with the fragments and souvenirs of many years playing to and with the denizens of rock n roll's global underbelly, and began to write songs of confusion, resolution, exploration and evolution. In a studio that echoed the feverish workings of an exploding consciousness, he gathered together the SOUNDS he needed, and the words he believed made sense. He exited the lair only to cross the boiling morass of the Tasman Sea, to find like minds that leaked insanity, and returned to his HQ with their pulsating offsprings, which he then inserted into the heart of the experiment. From there, it was only a matter of time before he gave it life, and named it Luger Boa!

2009 saw the release of Luger Boa's debut long player 'Mutate or Die' which was critically acclaimed and featured massive radio hits 'What is Real?', 'I Wanna Girlfriend' and 'On My Mind' - the Rock Radio Song of the Year. Quickly known for incendiary live shows, In their short existance the band have played to countless thousands across the country alongside the like of Shihad, The Mint Chicks, The Living End, Airbourne, The Charlatans and Head Like A Hole, from packed clubs to arenas, as main support for the Kings Of Leon. Earlier this year Luger Boa headlined the sold out State Of Rock nationwide tour, where they debuted the new material from the forthcoming album 'New Hot Nights'.

The first single 'Lazy' is already a certified radio hit, and second salvo 'Paralyzed' is already racing up the charts. There is much more to come from the album, recorded in Auckland and Melbourne, and mixed by Mark Needham in LA, and Andy Baldwin in NYC.
