Outrun the Buffalo - Outrun The Buffalo Newsletter Interview

31 Jul 2011 // An interview by Shade

Thanks to Tim for answering these questions:

What can we expect to see from Outrun the Buffalo over the next year?

A lot of gigs, especially in light of the recent release of our debut EP But Now They Live in a Zoo. We’ve been working on a heap of new material lately too that we’re keen to refine and get out into the ears of our audiences. We’re also working towards a second EP that we’re planning to release early next year.

Who are your favourite NZ musicians/bands, and why?

The Phoenix Foundation are a definite favourite, particularly their album on Happy Ending. They write some really awesome tunes with a real subtle brilliance that makes me proud to call them New Zealanders. The Naked and Famous are fantastic too; it’s great to see the success they’re having both at home and overseas. I’m also very fond of Connan Mockasin and his bizarre styles. Fat Freddy’s Drop are a long time favourite that can’t go unmentioned.

Who would you most like to support live?

Any of the above, for sure. It’d be choice to support some of our local heroes. Radiohead are a big influence of ours; supporting them would be amazing. We wouldn’t mind opening for a Pink Floyd reunion gig either.

How do you describe Outrun the Buffalo's music?

A delicious blend of Alternative Rock and Electronica. Influences are always a good reference point, in which case I’d point to Pink Floyd's epic soundscapes, Led Zeppelin's free flowing jams, Radiohead's eerie electronica, and Bon Iver's soft acoustic harmonies.

What is your favourite NZ venue?

Earlier this year I saw An Emerald City at The Winter Gardens in The Auckland Domain. It was the perfect venue, very atmospheric. Just so epic yet so chilled out at the same time. It reminded me of Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii.

What is the best part of being a musician?

Jamming with other musicians. Collective, free-flowing creativity that comes on the spot and consumes everyone involved, taking us wherever it wants us to go.

What NZ musicians or bands would you like to see more of, and why?

Sherpa supported us at our EP release gig in June and we were totally blown away by their live set. High energy and a lot of fun, I’d love to see more of them in the future. Two local shore fellas, one of whom mastered our EP for us, have a prog-rock/metal project called Look to Windward. They released an album at the end of last year featuring a bunch of local musicians. It’s seriously amazing stuff and I can’t get enough of it.

How did you come up with the name Outrun the Buffalo?

It’s taken from a song named Donkey Blues by electro-thug rap duo Captain Gayface and The Cool People. The final verse ends with an epic chant of "OUTRUN THE BUFFALO".
