So we are here with Gift Of Ruin, how long have you guys been together for now?
Gift Of Ruin - Ah nearly a year, not quite a year, nah over a year man, nah, yeah, nah, I actually don’t no. Ah yeah Junefest was our first gig in Wanganui at breakers bar!
Wow so your first gig was at Junefest?
Ryan - Yeah that was one of the weirdest things, walking into a family restaurant as a metal band and seeing families still eating looking up in despair like what’s going on... hahaha and then before you know it the meals are over and it’s just brutal metal and it was fucken one of the best gigs I’ve ever done in my life actually, I enjoyed that it was cool.
So what’s it like coming from Cage Demise (Matt, Ryan) and starting this new band with two guys from a younger generation of metal heads?
Matt - Yeah it’s pretty buzzy actually.
Ryan - It’s like being their Dad.
Matt - Yeah we always gotta pick em up and drop em off.
Ryan - And like, “you guys got a spare six bucks for a six dollar pack” haha.
Yeah nah it is a bit of an out of it mix ae with me and matt the old cunts and then these other two young fullas under twenty ya know.
Matt - It’s like mixing two little age groups man and we all make different music and we put it together.
Kahi - It goes into a tornado of... awesome.
Nah I like working with older people.
Matt - Like old ladies?
Ryan - Yeah I love it when you change my undies haha.
Kahi - Nah its just cos these dudes have a different approach on the music than me and Jono.
You mean they’re good?
(drunken laughter)
Kahi - Nah they just got a different approach, ya know like they think about things differently.
Matt - Thing is we’ve heard all the bands that are out now, we’ve heard it all before with the older stuff, like old as Meshugguh and like actual old as shit like the first pantera and shit ya know.
Are you talking back in the days of Metal Magic and Projects In The Jungle?
Matt - Yeah they’re always like check out this new band and we’re like yeah sounds like (enter band name).
Ryan - These guys keep us young though, I reckon without them we’d start getting old and stage performance would start slowing down, I mean I’m not gonna lie I fucking feel it afterwards man, I’m dying inside ae,I literally wanna spew, but ya know you gotta do it you just gotta keep going.
Who do you think are your biggest influences musically as a band?
Ryan - It’s gotta be for all of us collectively as a band... we all love Veil Of Maya.
Kahi - Yeah man they are awesome.
Kahi - We all love them but we’ve all got different approaches on our sound, for instance Matts more like a right hand technicality and I’m more of a left hand technicality ya know?
(Ryan falls of his chair laughing)
Ah no?...
Matt - He beats off with his left.
Kahi - We’ve just got different approaches to our sound so when it comes all together it turns out to be something that we wouldn’t even think of cos we’re using all our sources rather than just one persons thoughts, does that make any sense?
Yeah that makes more sense than the left hand/right hand comment...
What’s the funniest thing that’s happened at a gig?
Kahi - Ryan pulling his pants down and trying to put a fire truck up his ass.
Ryan - Oh yeah hahaha... extendable ladder, pants down, photo opportunity.
Kahi - Great photo!
Is it on Facebook? Haha
Ryan - Yeah yeah it is actually, it’s one of the first photos gift of ruin ever put up haha
I hope people can appreciate it, it was pretty funny.
I hear you guys are working on an album?
Ryan - Yeah, that’s what we are supposed to be doing now, the goal is to write at least ten songs and go straight for an album, scratch the EP thing and start from there.
Kahi - We’re gonna bring out a full length album!
Anything you want to say to your fans?
Ryan - Keep coming to our shows man and look us up on Youtube.
Mosh!
Matt - Yeah we’re gonna try and make shit more groovy so people can just mosh the whole time.
Kahi - Cos that’s all we want, just have a good time and get real fucking wasted!
