Interview with Cavalcade

16 Aug 2019 // An interview by Freecell

Northland due Cavalcade recently released their latest EP The Vacancy, which demonstrates a real maturity of production and sound, and touches on the duo's struggle with balancing a life of remoteness and natural beauty, with the feeling of being left behind in terms of technology and opportunity. Kerry from Muzic.net.nz spoke to Amberly about her inspiration to become a musician, influences and the story behind Cavalcade:

Cavalcade is a duo; how did you meet? And how long have you both been creating music for?

We met in high school doing a musical and just kinda clicked so it’s been around 8 or 9 years of making/playing music together.

What inspired you to become a musician?

I think music has just resonated with both of us since we were really young, and it made us want to play any instrument we could get our hands on. I don’t know if there was a specific moment that inspired us to do it, we just kinda grew up doing it together, so it was a natural progression.

Who are your musical influences?

We love so many genres of music. From Celine Dion to Jungle, Guns n Roses to Disney musicals. It’s so hard to say who directly influences the music we make because our music taste doesn’t necessarily stick to indie-pop which is kinda the overarching genre of our debut EP The Vacancy.

How did you come up with Cavalcade? What's the story behind the name?

Unfortunately, there’s no quirky story behind the name. I heard it in a Sara Bareilles song and just liked the way she said it! We were about to release our first song and we still didn’t have a band name, so it was one of those last minute, have to pick a name situations.

Wow your new EP is sounding awesome! What inspired the songs on the EP?

Thanks! Everything we write is a bit of an inner dialogue of what’ s going on in our heads at the time, so the songs reflect our ‘coming of age’ process and all the peaks and pitfalls of being a millennial.

What's happening in the future for you guys? Any tours coming up? More studio time?

We’re getting there with the tour! We’ve got another single coming out before the end of the year and plan to head back to the studio with some new tunes we’ve been working on.
