This week's newsletter continues with our 'what we do' series, and details what we can do for music venues. If you would like further information, email [email protected].
VENUES
To help maintain our gig guide, we like to retain a good relationship with venues. We have achieved this by creating a number of useful features on muzic.net.nz specific to venues.
GIG GUIDE and GIG GUIDE MAIL OUT
Muzic.net.nz is home to one of the most extensive online gig guides in the country. It can list in excess of 3,000 events, concerts or gigs at any one time, based anywhere in the country. Gigs also link back to the appropriate venue page, and vice-versa - providing a complete information resource.
Gigs for all venues can be added to our gig guide for free. Several venues including Mighty Mighty in Wellington and the Kings Arms in Auckland already email us their gig listings, and you can also do this by sending your latest gig guide listings to [email protected]. Alternatively, you can complete our add gig form.
Each fortnight muzic.net.nz sends two weeks worth of gigs to its members, via email. This gig mailout has proved to be extremely popular and the feedback we have received about it has been excellent.
The dates for our 2013 gig guide mail outs can be seen here.
If you have an event coming up that could do with some extra promotion - we can include a poster in the gig guide mailout, giving you impressive exposure. If you're interested please let us know.
VENUE DETAILS
Our extensive database of New Zealand live music venues is quite possibly the largest online. It is used daily by musicians and bands alike looking for new places to gig. We can help you out here too, by providing them with the information they need, including your contact details, capacities, PA system details, photos and more!
NEWSLETTER
As with bands and musicians, we can feature your venue in this newsletter.
The newsletter is a completely optional members only service. Because members have to specifically request it, they are more likely to read what you have to say. Over 8,000 members currently receive the newsletter and this number is growing every day!
The dates for our 2013 newsletters can be seen here.
Supporting NZ music venues since 1999.
In our next newsletter going out on 17 March, we will look at what we can do for NZ music websites and products.
- The muzic.net.nz team
Spending the best part of his youth dedicated to working as a musician, Phil Stoodley has toured extensively with The Feelers, brought together and fronted winners of the NZ Battle of the Bands, Stoods, won Best Songwriter and Best Singer awards and more recently has been working alongside emerging Kiwi artist Hanna Grace. The first fully-fledged debut solo album from Phil, No Surprise is a gentle midday mix, easy on the ears, void of pretention yet brimming with meaning. Phil answered the following questions for muzic.net.nz:
Who are your role models in the NZ music industry?
Neil Finn, Dave Dobbyn, Shihad… all have great work ethics and obviously very talented.
Which one of your songs are you most proud of, and why?
Walk Forward in Motion. The last track off my new album. It nearly didn't make in on the album but a friend said I'd be crazy not to finish it, so I did and very happy with the results. I was also fortunate to have Russian award winning director Andrey Shushkov direct an amazing animated video for it. You can check out the video here http://youtu.be/2c4gQG4pkfE
Do you have any plans for future collaborations with other musicians? Who would they be?
I just recently did a duo with singer Hanna Grace (video link: http://youtu.be/eFUzDb8tEzQ ). This was my first duet which was a lot of fun to write and record.
Where is your favourite place to relax in NZ?
Whitianga, Coromandel.
What NZ musicians or bands would you like to see more of, and why?
Salmonella Dub - I've seen these guys live a few times and they always blow me away. Shihad - Always rock ya sox off! Kimbra - She's one talented gal!
What is the one thing you want NZ to know about yourself?
I like Peanut Butter and Vegemite mixed on toast.
How would you describe your music in one sentence?
At the moment… pop/ rock. I also have a other projects floating around in different genres.
What has been your most memorable show to date?
Opening up for Velvet Revolver whilst playing guitar for The Feelers in Switzerland. Was a real buzz meeting Slash as he was one of my guitar heros growing up.
Tell us about your next release.
I've just released my debut solo album called No Surprise. You can download the whole album free from www.philstoodley.com
What local albums have you been enjoying recently?
Ruby Frost, Salmonella Dub, The Slacks.
What is your long term goal?
To keep evolving as an artist and colaberate with many more artists.
What sets you apart from other musicians?
Have a listen to my music and let you decide.
Where do you get your inspiration to create music from?
Life experiences, other music, books, movies, people, travelling.
What can we expect to see from you over the next year?
I wish I could answer that as I don't really know myself. I've been backpacking around Asia for the past 7 months seeing some amazing sights, culture and playing the odd gig on my way. I'll be settling in Sydney when I finally get back. Maybe I'll join a band and reinvent myself… who knows!
What advice would you like to give to other aspiring musicians?
Follow your own path, break all the rules and never censor your art.
What can you never leave home without?
My CR-2 blaster
What is your most embarrassing on tour/gig moment?
Kicking a can of beer off the stage and it hits a girl in the head. "NOT COOL".
What inspired you to become a musician?
Live at the Ritz - Guns n Roses.
What rumour would you like to start about yourself?
Having a one night stand with Cher.

No Surprise muzic.net.nz Album Review
Louie Knuxx is a hip hop artist hailing from New Plymouth, New Zealand, and the first NZ On Air Wildcard Making Tracks grant to be announced for 2013.
Uploading two tracks to theaudience.co.nz at the end of January, Knuxx was surprised to see ‘Aint Felt A Thing In Years’ rise to the top of the Wildcard Chart near the beginning of February.
“I am so delighted to finish first on theaudience [Wildcard] chart. The fact people cared enough to vote for my song is most gratifying and I think this is a great platform for artists who may go unrecognised by funding bodies, for whatever reason. I can't actually articulate how happy and grateful I am.”
PPNZ Music Licensing is really pleased to announce the launch of a new PPNZ Music Grants programme.
PPNZ has always provided a range of support across the recorded music industry, and would like to keep doing this. The new Music Grants programme will provide clear guidelines about the types of initiatives PPNZ can support, and how the application process works.
