Roll On NZ Music Month!

I know this might sound crazy - NZ music month is definitely the busiest time of the year for us and already I can't wait for it to get here. I know that once it gets here it will be complete madness for us with a constant stream of information to be updated on the site, but I also know that I will love every minute of it.

If you're in Wellington, go the NZMM launch >>>>

Starting it off with The Bleeders playing at the NZ Music Month Eve gig is one of the best decisions the NZ Music Month committee could have made. After seeing The Bleeders play live last Thursday (with Black Chrome, Tempo 38 and Australian band Gyroscope) I know that they will not disappoint when they officially 'open up' NZ Music Month. Their amazing stage presence captivates the audience and their talent is so raw it sends shivers down your spine. I even think that it could be possible that their performance could well and truly outdo Shihad's performance from last year... you should definitley make a point of going along to this gig - it's at the Waitangi Park in Wellington and will also be featuring Cherry's Gemstones and Deja Voodoo.

As for the gig we went to last Thursday - reviews and photos will be up on the site soon.

As with every other year, we are aiming to have as many gigs and competitions on the site during May as possible - so if you know of any gigs that aren't on the site yet or if you have any merchandise that you would like to give away, get in touch with us today! (Gigs can be added via our Add Gig Form)

We already have a huge amount of competitions on the site including Juse, Louie Knuxx, Donald Reid and dDub - and while there isn't something on there for every genre I can promise you that we are working very hard to get as many different competitions up as possible. Every person who wins a competition during May will also receive some NZ Music Month goodies.

For those of you who have been inviting us to events on MySpace - as we are based in Palmerston North we can't come to gigs in other cities, but we do have helpers working for us in Auckland. If you would like someone from muzic.net.nz to come along to your gig especially to review it, take photos of it or to interview you before or after the gig, let us know and we'll see what we can do.

All that aside, we hope you all have a great NZ Music Month - make sure you get out there and enjoy what NZ music has to offer!

Epitome

Epitome are an alternative grunge rock band from Auckland. Band members are Grant (guitar, vocals), Carl (drums), Warren (bass) and Sam (guitar).

Who are your favourite NZ bands and artists?

Grant: The Datsuns, Six Day War, Redline, Autozamm
Sam: The Datsuns and shihad
Carl: Redline, and Autozamm
Warren: The Datsuns, Epitome - or any other NZ band that gives it everything on stage

What is your favourite NZ venue?

Grant: Western Springs, The Masonic Tavern (lol)
Carl: Ericsson Stadium, The Masonic Tavern
Sam: The St James
Warren: Theres so many good venues around NZ to play at its hard to pick just one. The whole place is just set up for bands so i guess any packed out bar with lotsa beer.

What is the best thing about being in Epitome?

Grant: Shredding guitar solos, and an being able to play and write the music we like.
Carl: Being able to abuse people and get away with it because your in a band
Sam: Getting smashed with warren before gigs and screaming stuff at each other on stage
Warren: Being able to go insanely nuts on stage whilst still playing our favorite style of music. That and trying to out quote each other on the simpsons.

What is the best live gig you have ever been to?

Grant: Metallica @ Big Day out, and Joe Satriani @ The St James
Carl: Foo Fighters @ Ericsson Stadium '05
Sam: Metallica
Warren: Metallica BDO '04

Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?

Carl: touring the US, or maybe the UK with Epitome, two albums behind
us, and a playing some damn good music
Grant: Ditto
Sam: Depends on how our album release goes. Best case scenario touring US opening for Metallica
Warren: Having a bass shred-off with flea, billy sheehan and Pat Callis.

How do you keep in contact with your fans?

Grant: err..Live shows, Txt bombs, flyers, posters, smoke signals
Carl: Text bombs, email, websites, and by Helen Clark preaching racial injustice in parliament
Sam: most of our fans are my mates so i just tell them
Warren: via the "We hate Creed & Scott Stapp" forums

What rumour would you like to start about yourselves?

Grant: That once i lived in a land where lions roamed freely in my backyard...and James Hetfield was my personal butler, and homer simpson was my therapist.
Carl: that i slept with a rooster and got an STD, and thats why my hair is multicoloured
Sam: That our bassist played in Creed
Warren: 3 out of the 4 band members ice their nipples before going on stage.

What advice would you like to give to other aspiring musicians?

Grant: Put everything into your live shows, get people talking about your music, (good or bad), and get brilliant at whatever instrument you play, theres nothing worse than seeing a half arsed attempt at a guitar solo. When you've got a good command of your instrument, its easier to be creative and add more to your music.
Carl: don't give up no matter how hard the challenge seems, and don't split up as a band .. If you arent in a band, you cant become famous as one.
Warren: Dont forget why you started playing music. Keep it professional but in the end its all about having fun and rocking out, oh and watch plenty Simpsons.
Sam: Dont do it for money cos theres not a lot to be made, only do it if you enjoy it.

Brutally Frank

Brutally Frank are an Auckland based rock band. Thanks to Jeremy (vocals) for sorting out the answers to our questions!

Who are your favourite NZ bands and artists?

HDU, Shihad , Weta , Probe Sky, The Tuesdays, Goldenhorse, Straitjacket Fits

What is your favourite NZ venue?

Used to be the Powerstation, I’d say now the Studio or the Kings Arms – anywhere that’s got a big stage.

What is the best thing about being in Brutally Frank?

The closeness of the band, really we are like brothers more than mates. Not to mention our live show, which just quietly is a must see.

What is the best live gig you have ever been to?

Probably the first time I ever saw HDU play, at the Mandalay in Newmarket, closely rivalled by Tool at The North Shore Events Centre (the 1st time they played there) (or Alice Cooper at the Supertop – first concert ever)

Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?

A little bit fatter with a little less hair – and we’ll be on our fourth album by then as well!!

How do you keep in contact with your fans?

We ring them on Mothers day.

What rumour would you like to start about yourselves?

That we are all unrivalled in the trouser department and move like Elvis.

What advice would you like to give to other aspiring musicians?

Stay off drugs, see a dentist, and never lick a steak knife.
