dDub - dDUB - Awake At Dawn

15 Mar 2006 // A review by Shade
- Written by Felicity

As soon as I hit play, I was hooked. The new album by dDub, Awake At Dawn, starts off with an explosive bang: straight into the lively upbeat sound of Dub. Rich in trumpets, saxophones, and trombones, and garnished with energetic lyrics; it is enough for me to say that Awake At Dawn is my new favourite album.

Awake At Dawn includes addictive songs like Comfort, and I See A Sign as well as many more vibrant tunes - this album is guaranteed to be a success.

So for all of the Dub enthusiasts out there, The Black Seed fans, or anyone who wants to be motivated and groove to cheerful sounds – this album is for you!

About dDub

dDub are one of New Zealand’s best loved live acts. Engaging and uplifting, the dDub crew propel their way seamlessly through a powerful and non-stop roots explosion. Horns, harmonies, and hands-high dDub tunes combine to create an elevating musical experience not to be missed.

Combining authentic roots styles with a contemporary approach to creating conscious music, dDub have developed a sound free from digital, and modern in production. Renowned for their 'cranking and skanking' live shows, the band never fails to connect with the crowd and they have become firm favourites at many nationwide outdoor festivals in NZ including Rhythm and Vines, WOMAD, Queenstown Winter Festival, Soundsplash.

The largest New Years Eve Celebration in New Zealand, Rhythm and Vines chose dDub to take the 13,000 strong crowd into 2008.

27 Nov 2023 // by Shade
Whatever came out of the pandemic, it stranded some amazing talent here long enough for them to enrich our musical world. Down into the Lopdell labyrinth, a buzz of age-spanning expectancy waited for two of these: Maggie Cocco and her accompanist for the tour Bonnie Schwarz who would add much more than just ‘sad cello’ to tonight’s epic cycle of piano songs.

Eve Kelly @ Jam Factory, Tauranga - 03/03/2023
08 Mar 2023 // by Shade
The ‘Sold Out’ sign is a good sign and it went up several days before Eve Kelly’s first show at The Jam Factory in Tauranga’s Historic Village. Whakatane-based Eve Kelly is a star on-the-rise and she put on a show that left her audience, old and new, elated and begging for more.

Coridian - Single Review: Seed II
21 Oct 2020 // by Shade
There's an implicit line in Rock music between the head-banging craze that makes you want to raid the mosh pit, and the refined preciseness of a subtle yet powerful tune. Very few bands can master both.
