DateMonthYear - DateMonthYear- 7Ghosts

28 Mar 2007 // A review by johnsoncraigsbc
Prelude- amazing. Intense and fierce. Scary and probing. Fantastic. I would buy the CD- 7GHOSTS by DateMonthYear solely for that piece of progressive mastery. It was an enjoyable experience listening to an opening track of an up and coming band that was so good. Tool meets the Mars Volta is the best way to describe it. The intensity of the prelude was amazing. Dark and curiously intriguing. Listen to it loud, in a dark room.

After such an awesome opening piece, things like the back up vocals on ghost 1 and the lyrics on ghost 4 were disappointing. Ghost 5 was quite good, with some potentially good singing attributes showing through. My overall feeling from this band, as I’ve never heard of them or seen them before, is that they are really quite good at unstructured, progressive pieces and really should shy away from the more structured styles of songs. Ghost 1 through to ghost 4 are all quite structured songs and I don’t feel this works as well for them, going on the amazing attributes of the prelude and ghost 6 which were the highlights of the Cd for me.

Throughout the whole CD there are certain moments that are really quite beautiful. The harmony on Ghost 6, the singing solo on Ghost 5, the intensity of the prelude and the tension of Ghost 7 are all moments which I would love to hear more of from this band. If DateMonthYear can take all these best bits of their song writing and push them as far as they can go, they will be heading towards being a great progressive rock band. The experimental parts of some of the songs made up the best parts of the album. With no holds on anything I’d love to see them move forward with their experimental pieces and truly let go of their song structures, as I feel some of the songs on this album detracted from their powerful instrumental creations. I hope to hear more of DateMonthYear in the future, with intensified progressive pieces, and more experimentation than you can throw a stick at.

Recloose- Perfect Timing
14 Apr 2008 // by johnsoncraigsbc
Recloose has been busy and after such previous success, the now internationally exalted producer and DJ has brought a new touch to living room and club dance with ‘Perfect Timing’, taking a few pages out of the eighties in the process. Starting the album with Rachel Frasier and the mellow sophistication of ‘Catch A Leaf’ is the perfect way to precede the dismal post eighties revival that is ‘Robop’.

We all want to be just like you- Crash Test For Favourite Things The general aesthetic of Crash Test for Favourite Things has matured since their debut, self titled album, and the cover art captures some of the imagery that is apparent in the music wonderfully. It speaks innocence and injustice.

The Phoenix Foundation - Happy Ending
20 Dec 2007 // by johnsoncraigsbc
After such success from ‘Pegasus’ it was exciting to hear what direction The Phoenix Foundation had taken with their new album- 'Happy Ending'. I like the album and its casual holiday appeal, with up beat happy tunes like ‘Bright Grey’ and ‘Bleaching Sun’, but opening singles aside; the album showcases all of the song writing talent that is The Phoenix Foundation.
