It was recently my pleasure to review
Secluded By Right's
SbR EP - their debut 6 track CD that just didn't do them any justice - only made me need to see them live. These guys have been playing together for years, and you can certainly tell - clean, sharp riffs, powerful anthems leaving me wanting more. My tracklist breakdown follows ...
Track 1 –
Jump The Wagon (2:52)
Extended drum solo leads into head-banging goodness from the lead. Strange but enticing vocals – reminded me of Suicidal Tendencies vocally. Very punk. Nice rhythm, awesome axe – excellent drum beats. Nice secondary vocals.
Track 2 –
Heads Down (3:04)
Good piss-drinking song, excellently presented. Excellent and hard instrumental work, vocals sharing ground with solid heart-felt lyrics. Would go off in the pub – memorable and catchy chorus. Excellent, punk metal action.
Track 3 –
2am (3:03)
A little slower but still nice and heavy – nice vocal work without losing rhythm ... nice short bass picks, really gets the melon banging. Working well together, the band sounds as they are having a great time. Excellent guitar/bass play enhanced by a strong but simple drum melody. Nice climax.
Track 4 –
This Is Your Life (2:50)
Nice and bold intro, a little slower, same strong instrumentals, not as catchy as some of the others. Very same old actually. If this is my life then I need to visit another country. Or eat more curry. Nice message, repetitive toward the end.
Track 5 –
The Drought (3:12)
Strong and resounding bass, raises the hair on the back of your neck. Vocals developing a little more, doing some fun stuff with his voice. Good to hear. Nice rapid guitar work, very effective. The crispest sound from any song on the CD, verses building nicely toward the chorus, which doesn't disappoint. Some retro axe plucking about a minute till the end, nice break - kept me interested. I could hear this on the wireless.
Track 6 –
So Secure (3:40)
Awkward start to the final track, very 80's NZ metal ... rolling into 90's pop punk. Falls back into familiar ground, conjuring up yet another similar chorus. Slow & repetitive, despite heavy punk riffs. Shame really, I felt the last track let them down.
Overall, an excellent debut, a little short, but well worth the listen. See these guys live if you get the chance, I reckon they would go off. Buy a CD, it's bands like these that deserve our support.
