Nga Tama Kino - bar bodega

The recent gig at the bodega room 101 was a blast for nga tama kino, so said karena puhi as there were four other bands playing in the room above, so punters had a lot of different bands to choose from, hey but it was fun he said because when they had breaks they could go round the back of the bar-bodega and mingle with the other muso's where they could discuss the poor state of the wellington music scene particularly for original music bands and for nga tama kino it was doubly difficult in that they being tangata whenua and playing their brand of iwi grunge and metal had a worse time of it. hey thanks obviously have to go to ole "fraser" one of the few friends of original music in the country and a real dude cheers mate. he has given nga tama kino gigs where no one else would.
but I guess there has to be much more effort on the part of government and other venue owners nationwide put into the marketing side of local bands, but thats another issue.
though nga tama kino played songs from their last album such as the classic "papatuanuku" and "kaore au e whakaae" they played newer songs like awanuiarangi and mauriaokete both very striking songs in that they were soulful grungey and rocky even metalish as well so as a reviewer I could not help but be reminded that nga tama kino are as they have ever been a greta protest band and that their songs are all merely an expression of the path they want to travel and highlighting the great divisiveness in aotearoa caused by this invading government which has been ensconced in NZ since 1840 makes their music much more relevent. their content certainly reflects this, shit they are a good band, and even they seemed intent on getting through the night without getting too loud which they achieved brilliantly their protestations at the government were unrelenting. Going by a scan of their gigs through the local papers it seems that this has to be one of the hardest working bands in the aotearoa, who are slowly but gradually building up an audience, check them out also at http://ihirecords.co.nz/prod01.htm. This hard working band will play anywhere as long as it is where their brand of cultish songs can be appreciated by the people they are targeted at and that is anyone and everyone. as this band plays mainly in the reo and you are interested in the language of aotearoa then you may be interested in them.
according to lead guitarist karena puhi they are in the middle of making a deal with a chinese agent who want to release some songs into the huge chinese market, the deal there though is that all monies made have to remain in china which suits nga tama kino just fine in that their dad had a chinese grandfather, and they are thence descendents of the chinese people "I can not dismiss the idea of being a rich chinese business person living in china as well as aotearoa said karena puhi", the contact in china suggests that if one song can be sold to just 1% of the population then well.... karena reckons they are applying to iwi organsiations to assist with this venture.
don't forget nga tama kino are playing at the adelaide on the 15th of june 2007 in wellington I will be there to do another review of them so come along and enjoy the language of the indigenous people of aotearoa in a grungey way.

About Nga Tama Kino
We have been a band for twelve years, mind you the fact that we are brothers could mean that we have been a band all our lives. We consider ourselves to be an indigenous band, being that we do not do this for profit (although that would be nice) it is as if it is a calling.
If after hearing our waiata you would like us to come to your town, city, festival or concert then we would definately for a reasonable price go out of our way to come and play our brand of waiata / music to you.
The band members tribal affiliations including our ancient connections, to the indigenous peoples of America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia: are through Nga Puhi, Ngati Hamoa, Te Hikutu, Tautari, Ngati Awa, Rangitane, Muaupoko, Te Roroa, Ngati Rehia etc. Our parents marriage was a toumou or an arranged union between the (chiefly) ariki lines of the indigenous people of aotearoa and the ali'i (chiefly lines) or the indigenous people of Samoa.
