Reviewing: “Cybiont” A Trilogy of Random Thoughts & Considerations
If you are like me, you like many kinds of music. I suspect that the creator of “Cybiont” – (a planetary macro-organism under construction. The symbiotic co-evolution of biology and technology - where organisms, machines, social structures and networks become a single entity - a ‘planetary brain’ - with humans as its neurons), is a lot like us.
In his debut album, this New Zealander successfully combines an array of music styles into a creamy blend of planetary soup. In kind, it’s better to not ask of the ingredients until it slides across your tongue. Once you do, you’ll find tasty seasonings of instruments both familiar and not so familiar. What smoothes out the experimental recipe is this artists buttery voice that comforts while still questioning your senses.
Though I’m from Detroit, USA, I suspect we are alike still in the fact that we all need a special place to go. A place different from our usual day to day. Here in ‘the motor city’, my daily diet of high energy garage rock wears on me at times. This is when I close my curtains, turn off my phone and shut down the internet.
I retreat into music that makes me feel as opposed to escape, think as opposed to react.
“Cybiont” is that special kind. With lyrics like, “I like to talk to a priest - about his delusion , To the devil -about his deeds , To God – about his absence……….” , ones mind is instantly and delightfully exercised. He also playfully uses words to paint a rhetorical question in ‘Something Wrong With Me?’ , “Living in this artificial sphere, It’s kind of a bubble, Built on shit and 911 rubble……”
As a debut album, “Random Thoughts & Considerations” is remarkably sophisticated and leaves you wanting for more.
In short, “Cybiont” does what all art should do, offer a vision that one can take inside themselves and nourish the soul.
