Epitome - Testing The Water EP Review
20 Jul 2004 // A review by Shade
Testing The Water is an EP from a band that has their heads screwed on right. Auckland band
Epitome know what they want and what they need to do to get it.
Epitome started 2004 with a huge North Island tour featuring NZ bands
Fourth Member and
Mozelee.
Epitome have had huge amounts of positive feedback from the industry, and have constantly been in the face of the media for the entire time they have existed, including a live performing on Good Morning.
Grant's vocals are truly outstanding and his guitar solos nothing short of amazing, Warren's bass adds just the right element to the music and Carl's drums are fast paced and hard hitting. With all of this put together,
Epitome's performances are tight and well rehearsed.
The newest edition to
Epitome is Sam Kingston. After listeing to
Testing The Water I am truly looking forward to hearing something from all four members of the band.
Whether you listen to songs for the lyrics or the music,
Lost and
You Will Be Mine will keep you interested. You can tell a lot of thought has gone into the lyrics and music on these two songs in particular, however this is something that is evident throughout the entire EP.
All of the tracks on this EP had my head moving to the beat of the music - the music is exciting with something new around every corner.
In short,
Epitome rock - and I'm sure they wouldn't have it any other way.
About Epitome
Epitome was a 4-piece Independent Alternative Grunge Rock band, whose sound has been described as a blend of melodic catchy hooks shredding guitar solo's, heavy cymbals and raw punchy bass. Epitome has a unique sound that they reserve as their own.
Starting out as a 3-piece under the name Dissident the band released its first demo Consequence after being together for 3 months. That in turn lead to a name change and 7-track demo EP entitled Testing The Waters which has now sold out. The EP produced two singles You Will Be Mine and Fade. You Will Be Mine was released as a video and played on C4 music TV and Fade received airplay on B-net stations. Epitome also toured over the summer of 2004 with Mozelee and Fourth Member to promote the release of the EP. The tour was a great success finishing up to a packed house at the Empire Tavern.
Following on from the success of Testing The Waters and with the addition of Sam Kingston on guitar, Epitome recruited Dave Rhodes to produce the new single
