Last Thursday saw the inaugural Lewis Eady Acoustic night; and what a pleasant evening it was. Lewis Eady, the music shop near Market Rd, Greenlane, opened its doors to a different breed of patron, serving up an evening of exceptional acoustic local talent (as well as tasty ginger or coke flavoured cupcakes and handfuls of butter popcorn).
The back of the large shop was converted into a music lounge, with guitars and fairy lights lining the walls and pianos interspersed in the corners. Decorated around were lamps which brought a warm glow to the room. The audience sprawled on couches and sunk into beanbags. A grand piano formed the centrepiece at the front. Beethoven's bust looked on from his perch.
The evening's artists featured three of Auckland's pearls: Mali Mali, Lydia Cole and The Glory Sea. The boys from Mali Mali opened the night with their delicate musicianship and Ben Tolich's calm vocals. Interweaved with acoustic guitar and piano were electronic loop tracks which provided a genial contrast.
Lydia Cole began with a solitary instrumental on the grand piano before introducing herself and her guitar to her attentive audience. Her set included familiar favourites Feels Like and On My Hand, while Stu Larson joined her on vocals and guitar for Come With. She even included a tune so new it could only be described as a half-song (though wholly amiable).
Finally, Joel Greatbatch and Andy Spier from The Glory Sea, both sporting chic plaid shirts, topped off the evening with a variety of "oh I remember that song"s, ballads from their new EP, and popular tunes such as Lily White, all re-rendered in acoustic form.
Indicative of the artists' influences, two of the three performances featured Coldplay covers, with Lydia Cole spreading Sparks and The Glory Sea encouraging us with Don't Panic.
The first Lewis Eady Acoustic evening was a wonderful night out. On reflection, a music store seems like an obvious venue to connect musicians and fans. There are plans to make it a regular event (and rumour has it they'll be giving away a $50 voucher next time). So look out for the ads, brave the fresh winter chill and get along to the Lewis Eady Acoustic Series.
