When the gloom of the night creeps in, and the people enter into the realm of dreams, an artist sits awake, in Wellington. In his lack of sleep, without falling into his dreams, he churns out a series of songs that embody his frustration and fatigue. My Schizophrenic Acoustic the 2011 album by AmosAnon is an album for those who are sleeping awake. The sound has been tagged as gothic acoustic and it is exactly that. This album is full of the darkness of the night to which AmosAnon could not succumb to.
It begins with ‘Dysomnia’ which captures the frustration of insomnia. The grinding of the chords is aggravating makes it feel like being on the brink of reality and a dream, of sanity and insanity. This album takes the listener into the dystopia of sleep.
In ‘Fade Out or Die Away’ you can feel his need to try and find something stable when you are hanging and swinging and all you want to be is still. This album is so honest it permeates through your skin. It is hard not to be there with him. The haunting drum beat in ‘Self-Immolation’ grasps you in until the beats begin to mirror each palpitation of your heart.
‘Somniloquy’ asks the question ‘why can’t I fly?’ with a desperation that is chilling. Those words will resonate with you, long after listening to the album. AmosAnon himself describes ‘Death of Marvel’ as a song about the creation process. It begins with the beautiful cries of the guitar strings as they are touched. Yet behind this is an impending pounding that indicates that you should remain on the edge of your seat. And then suddenly, the real song kicks in...
Any good album has a secret or hidden track. And this is a good album. The ‘Hidden Track’ is ‘An impromptu performance at Hampton Court back in 2005 that was never supposed to be shown to anyone.’This is definitely a message to someone, and one that is sure to have been received. Its anger and brutal honestly is sure to ring true to a number of people out there who have been in the same situation.
I believe that a lot of creativity can emerge from the irritation of insomnia. AmosAnon has captured his insomniatic impetuosity and turned it into an irksome illumination. This is an album only for those who can handle the depths of desolation that it reaches. Yet it is comforting, in its own twisted way, that AmosAnon manages to express the inexpressible.

If you haven't heard of Amos/Anon, then everything is fine. The system is working. Keep calm and stop thinking. Close your eyes and let capitalism lull you back into a dreamless slumber.
"...it’s Kiwi from end to end, indie and awesome. The more I listen, the more I want!"
"...unashamedly bolshie and brazen. There is no room for tenderness here."
