Secondi - Pre-album Release Review

31 Aug 2011 // A review by Miss_Jukebox

The meaning of cool has changed over time. Actually, it is not the meaning of the word that has changed, but rather what defines it. Each decade has brought a new trend that, although we deny ever following it, the photographs say otherwise. Cool is the chameleon in society. It changes its shape, its colour, its texture to suit its surroundings. So forget the cool of the past. And get to know the cool of the present. Right now, cool is a Christchurch band called Secondi.   Four young and determined lads started a band. They are independent and doing it for the pure joy of making music. Secondi have produced a five-track pre album release to allow us to get to know this up and coming group.

The album begins with their released song ‘UnExpect.’ It is a sweet song with an equally charming music video to accompany it. It has a buoyant nature that is haracteristic of the youthful and carefree sound of the band. ‘I Think She Knows’ is a really infectious indie song that is bound to get repeat listens from you.

‘Milk and Sugar’ is the first of the three Demos on this pre-album release. In this song, Secondi allow themselves to play around with their instruments. They give the guitar the freedom to run a little wild and by the end of the song you are thrown into a tailspin of Secondi swag. ‘Drop the Watch’ is an amazing instrumental track that cleverly shifts between moods. It touches upon a razor sharp edginess, then slides into a rock’n’roll sway. And before you know it you are catapulted back into the driving fast beats and ripping of guitar strings. The final track, ‘DANB’ is another instrumental that begins with an extremely attractive guitar lead-in. The demos are not perfected just yet, but they show promise for what the band will produce for their full length album.

What is great about Secondi is that in this pre-album release you can feel them trying to find their feet musically. And that is what makes it so fun; being able to listen to these young artists carving themselves out as musicians, as songwriters and as performers. So they may not be a band that is going to drastically change the music scene. Their sound is somewhat generic. But it is a sound that is popular today, so why not stick to what works. They have not quite established exactly who they are as artists yet. But with time and more experience Secondi are sure to find themselves. This five-track pre-album release is just a lot of fun, and if you know a good thing and want to keep up with what is cool, then Secondi are a band that you will be following.

About Secondi

In Christchurch, many moments ago, an Indie Pop band Secondi bloomed out of a flower pot and burst onto the scene of a LAN party. Fresh indie tunes promptly followed with the occasional well organized gig.

Secondi is currently recording their album and are going to be releasing it to the public to buy as a physical copy or digital through Itunes or bandcamp. The album comprises of much of the music they have enjoyed writing over the past few years.

Secondi have released a music video for their single UnExpect which was received well and can be viewed on Youtube or on their website. They are also soon to be releasing a music video for their single “Ignorance is Bliss” which will be heavily influenced by Minecraft.

Having built a steady portfolio of compositions since the turn of this century, Age Pryor (Fly My Pretties, The Woolshed Sessions, Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra) has inconspicuously become a pillar amongst New Zealand’s finest artists. And in the same understated way his career has unfolded so far, his new single Burning Sun retains the unassuming charm and placidity of his sound.

Raconteur is the second full-length album from the band, who formed in Wellington during 2014 after Burkitt, and his partner Kara Filbey (who provides vocals, flute and percussion on the album) moved from Edinburgh.
