Geoff Ong - Implications Single Review

29 Jul 2012 // A review by Miss_Jukebox

Talented is an understatement when it comes to describing the bright, young musician Geoff Ong. Ong is a student from Auckland, who has an evident passion and skill when it comes to songwriting and performing. His latest single 'Implications' from his debut EP Pictures, is a showcase of what the multi-faceted artist can do. Ong holds a soul-pop charm is so endearing. While he is a singer/songwriter he also mixed and recorded this track himself, as well as performed all of the instrumentation in it. Ong is a one-man, soul-band you are going to want to keep an eye on.

The opening piano chords of 'Implications' are like the first fragments of the sun breaking through your curtains on a Spring morning. You know it is going to be a good day. Ong's vocals come through, and it is a sugur-rush.It is all marshmellows and cotton candy. His voice is pure, with that youthful innocence that is so heart-warming.

'Implications' has the character of an soul-pop ballad, which shows the artistic maturity of this 22 year old singer. It has the fanfare of the brass dancing across the track. The song is laced with cushy harmonies throughout which dance around the ears.Ong sticks to the basics in this track. It is breezy and light in its simplicity. 'Implications' is melt-in-your-mouth goodness. It is hard not to break into a huge smile while listening to this scrumptions delight.

About Geoff Ong

Geoff Ong wants to be a pop star for dorks. “I love all the sounds and melodies of pop music, but I never really felt like I was cool enough to relate to the people performing it,” he says. “I figure there must be other people out there who feel the same way – my music is for them.”

Geoff’s 2018 single, Fingerprints, a shimmering slice of soulful indie pop, was recorded in his bedroom in Kingsland, with production, mixing and mastering by Phil Levine of the illustrious Igloo Music Studios in Los Angeles, who won two Grammy Awards for their work on 2016’s box office hit, La La Land.

Fingerprints made an immediate impact, peaking at #3 on the Hot NZ Singles Chart and #25 on the overall Hot Singles Top 40 Chart. It was also featured on ZM, The Edge, The Edge TV, and Radio New Zealand.

Having built a steady portfolio of compositions since the turn of this century, Age Pryor (Fly My Pretties, The Woolshed Sessions, Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra) has inconspicuously become a pillar amongst New Zealand’s finest artists. And in the same understated way his career has unfolded so far, his new single Burning Sun retains the unassuming charm and placidity of his sound.
