The New Brides - The New Brides EP Review

17 Oct 2012 // A review by Miss_Jukebox

Lock up your daughters! A new bunch of heartbreakers are entering the scene. The New Brides have been charming venues across Wellington, and now they have recorded the lust in their debut EP. These five tracks of striking tequila rock will have you gasping for more.

The EP opens with the buoyant ‘Record’ a song of pure vigour and stunning dynamism. It is all very rock’n’roll with swaggering vocals and flirty instrumentation which carry into the gorgeous track ‘Circus.’ This song whispers sweet nothings in your ear with decadent layers of rolling drum beats and enticing rhythms.

‘Angel Wings’ sobers it up as a poignant little ballad. The tenderness of the song is apparent, full of an endearing passion and ache. ‘Jesus Pilot’ has these Casanovas once again pulsating through you with a mischievous number. The EP closes with ‘Mind’ another track that blusters across the room with true grit. Overall this work has a real alternative rock allure with a piquant and fiery flavour.

The New Brides are throwing a party and this EP is their fiesta. The work is gritty and vibrant, like a salacious Saturday night. The sexy vocals will arouse you. The smouldering guitars will seduce you. The New Brides are here to capture and break your heart.

About The New Brides

“Wedding-crashers rejoice! Their name may evoke pristine scenes of bouquet-landscapes and nuptial-chamber chastity, yet the songs produced by Wellington Indie-rockers The New Brides contain the same essential rock ‘n’ roll swagger and teenage-angst as London’s The Clash and New York’s The Strokes. Whereas Wellington’s residents have become accustomed to the swirling sounds of the ambient shoegaze genre, The New Brides conjure a raw sonic energy that captures the capital’s blue-collar music scene set against a colorful backdrop of melancholic lyrics about love, loss and drugs.”

Age Pryor - Single Review: Burning Sun

Having built a steady portfolio of compositions since the turn of this century, Age Pryor (Fly My Pretties, The Woolshed Sessions, Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra) has inconspicuously become a pillar amongst New Zealand’s finest artists. And in the same understated way his career has unfolded so far, his new single Burning Sun retains the unassuming charm and placidity of his sound.

Raconteur is the second full-length album from the band, who formed in Wellington during 2014 after Burkitt, and his partner Kara Filbey (who provides vocals, flute and percussion on the album) moved from Edinburgh.
