Dang, this is a bangin' compilation! The George FM Yearbook 2012 is full of super catchy indie electronic tracks. What a great showcase of talent, I'll have some of these on repeat for a while I think.
It's mainly pumping indie electronic/dance tracks, with a rap a cappella thrown in by David Dallas and a few interlude tracks (Avicii and P Money/Dan Aux). This is a great album - well done George FM… great electronic taste as usual.
Overview of some tracks:
Van She, Martin Solveig and Golden Age bring the new poppy electro stuff.
There's a Recloose number that's a bit darker and is rather hypnotic.
Turn Me Out by MayaVanya and P Money is full of dynamics, hooky fills and deep kicks.
It's followed up by Magik Johnson with a percussion infused, suave club track.
Daydream by Flux Pavillion is super shimmery with some great synth work, going into a half beat drop.
Benga feat Bebe Black - Icon is great to listen to as her voice sounds so great and is quite quirky in parts.
Golden Age did a remix of a Ruby Frost track, it works really well.
For me the standout track was Kids of 88 - Tucan, absolutely beautiful. A slow burning, glittery track. Though I'm always a sucker for an etheral track with generous amounts of reverb, good hand claps and some side chain… it almost reminds me of that track U.N.K.L.E. did with 3D from Massive Attack - very hypnotic. Gem of a track! The video for it by Auckland based studio Chrysalis films is good too, I hope Air NZ are playing that on those pre-flight screen things.
I think the best thing about this compilation is that I'm so proud most of the music is by NZ artists! Great music and talent.
Tracks I put on my own playlist are:
7. Kids of 88 - Tucan
1. Van She - Idea of Happiness
2. Martin Solveig - The Night Out
