Theseonyas are a guitar focused indie rock band which appealed me to straight away and are certainly NOT your run of the mill band.
The CD I reviewed was a 7 song EP called Extended Pleasures, which was a nice play on acronyms.
They certainly have a distinct retro sound and at one point I thought I was reviewing a 1970's rock band. This is not a bad thing at all; however I had a few issues with it also.
In the first track Hamilton Rocks, the over use of NZ place names became very tedious indeed after only one listen. It works well in the second track Lets Hetet as they describe how their ancestors came to New Zealand. Lyrically it could benefit from some more variation.
The singer has a certain style which is unique; however there seems to be some strain to reach the high notes, with more work I think he could master this and become a Pete Docherty sort of weird, which would be great.
The best song for me was Go Hard which had a Rolling Stones feel and highlighted good potential for Theseonyas.
Also on the CD were two remixes of Lets Hetet and Hamilton Rocks which just seemed to be fillers on the EP, as they didn’t add anything over the originals.
A band with promise, and I will keep an eye out for them in the future.
