In October last year, though it doesn’t feel that long ago, I had the pleasure of reviewing Magpie Genocide, the debut from Auckland rock outfit The Glocks. Almost a year and a line-up change later, the Glocks are back with more rock, more swagger and a more refined sound.
I’ve been lucky enough to be passed copies of three of the bands current singles to cast my discerning ear upon, and I’m happy to announce that as well as being just as good as the Magpie Genocide material, each single rocks harder than the last.
Seasons
The most alternative rock of the three singles I’ve been lucky enough to get my hands on. Like the sound of 90s mainstays Smashing Pumpkins, Silverchair and Nirvana, the influence of Led Zep is clear. While Louise and Cage Fighter are songs that would translate directly onto the small stage of any good pub, Seasons is more introspective and studio refined. A song that a lot of effort has gone into, and a song that delivers different types of enjoyment of successive listens.
Louise
The tongue in cheek humour of the Glocks comes through in this lust song Louise. As one of the band’s narrative songs, the lyrics speaks true of every late night walk home after a evening of pleasure denial and a case of, how you say, blue balls.
More upbeat than Seasons, but more mellow than Cage Fighter, the addition of the female backup vocalist adds extra dimensions of awesome to the band’s already full sound.
Cage Fighter
Cage Fighter is a bolshy Punk Rock n’ Roll hit, where the band earn their rock and growl label. This is the single where the change in singer from the Magpie Genocide material is most obvious. A lyrical pissing contest I find the Glocks the winner. I mean, what better metaphor for being hard than “Chuck Norris has got nothing on me.”
Incidentally, the Glocks are holding a Cage Fighter music video contest. If you’re someone that’s into video production then read the guidelines and make a submission on the Glocks website (http://www.theglocks.com/makeourvideo.cfm).
You can stream the above singles and more from the Glocks website, and for the small price of your email address you can download five of their tracks for free (http://www.theglocks.com/ourmusic.cfm). I personally, can’t wait for the album.
The Glocks are a rock and growl band writing and playing original music that has an 80's type rock new wave vibe. The songs are punctuated with irreverant humerous, sometimes dark sometimes sleazy lyrics, growling guitars and cool pop hooks.
