I love taking on new challenges, I put my head down and meet the oncoming collision without any thought for my well being. When I was given this assignment, I made a few trips to the world of the internet, to research this chaps, to assume the attack position. I thought to myself ‘oh know, this is not going to end well’ I am a renaissance rocker, with a love for long hair, and a persuasive power chord, with a partial regard for rap and hip-hop. What first looked like a train wreck soon turned into a rather splendid afternoon of old school beats that resonated with my inner teenage years.
The first track Over and Out is very gritty, with a very ‘hood’ feel, I know it’s easy to think of hip-hop as gangster-esque, but this song definitely had an angry feel and assumed every stereotype surrounding the genre.. When the opening trumpets called in
I must admit, when I think of hip-hop, Kiwi’s definitely do not stand at the front of the queue when it comes to rapping, having that drool that made rappers like biggie, and Tupac all so appealing. These guys surprised me and put out a raping style that is not to be frowned upon. They might not have the spark of a
The song Rapshift is easily my favourite on this EP, it has plenty of energy, sounds very similar to Cypress Hill and that is no easy feet. Festive Seasoning brings the sound down to a mellow beat, enabling the listener to take in the razz and the tazz of the previous 4 songs. These 5 songs really set an impression on me from a heart felt stance. I’m a big fan of music as a entity and will never assume a style of music is not of my choosing. The songs invoked an emotional response and on the whole it was positive. A must buy for hip-hop fans.
Powered by an explosive blend of classic hip-hop & criminally insane theatrics, SuperVillians (RMC) are a covert collective of cloaked craftsmen who have been taking the New Zealand music scene hostage since 2011.
This enigmatic crew of mic prodigies and turntable terrorists came to life in Grey Lynn, Auckland last year and consists of Fred Bishop (aka Fred Bish), Eden Jouavel (aka Dr Black), Manu Walters (aka Dirty Quarters), Piata Turei (aka The Sweaty Tooth Madman) and Liam Bree (aka Debris the stitched mouth). A hip-hop collective with a taste for the bizarre and a tendency to become dangerously unhinged onstage, SuperVillians are unlike anything the scene has ever experienced before.
The group’s cohesive blend of old-school rhythms, grinding loops, lyrical wizardry and frenetic on-stage antics provides an overpowering assault on the senses. With a sound which is firmly rooted in the classic hip-hop of the late 80’s and early 90’s – seamlessly fusing sampled funk and soul elements with dynamic beats and a ferocious verbal barrage – these hip-hop misfits have created an entirely organic, original and visceral sound.
