It wasn't long ago that I reviewed Shayna King's debut album, The Day Is Young, which showed a young singer/songwriter starting to find her footing as a recording and touring artist.
After one listen to her new single, Calling You, I could really see and hear a huge leap forward.
Calling You is a very radio ready track that I would compare to the likes of Anika Moa and Anna Coddington with a twist of country for flavour.
I'm a sucker for good production and doing songs justice through the recording process and this song has been dealt a great justice with what has been produced. Shayna's voice is warm and alluring, making good use of melodic hooks.
The arrangement itself is rather basic which is part of the charm behind it. The lead guitar bends are tasteful and used sparingly, letting the song breathe and a really solid, up beat groove from her drummer really adds to the drive of the song.
There is a prominent market for Shayna's music especially with summer growing closer by the day and she is growing stronger with each release that I have heard.
Calling You really is good and that about sums it up in one word....... good :)

A “melancholic view of an OE” has inspired New Zealand singer-songwriter SHAYNA’s new single Miles Away. “Travelling the globe with a sole companion and seeing the best and worst in each others characters as you are both exhausted, low on money and feeling like outsiders who don’t fit into the fast-paced rhythm of a foreign city.”
