The long awaited debut from Kiwi rock metallers, Devilskin in all its glory. Finally! If you know your Kiwi music, you’ll be more than familiar with this band and their rise in the metal/rock scene, taking everyone and everything by storm.
Formed in 2010, the Hamilton quartet have been not so quietly slaving away, crafting their enormous power stage sound that you know, see and hear. Vocalist, Jennie Skulander is a one woman force to be reckoned with. Her sultry 50’s pin up style masks this incredible growl and melody that defies anything you have heard in Kiwi metal in a long time.
The well known single, Little Pills with its punchy riff, instantly attracted a lot of people to this band, so the stakes could only get higher, when they kept on pushing them out with the eloquent, Never See The Light and contagious rocker Start A Revolution.
Alongside Jennie and her powerful presence, the equally talented men of the band should not be forgotten. Compromising of another Kiwi favourite staple, The Axe Attack metal radio show host, Paul Martin is also no stranger to his metal beginnings with Devilskin, fronting for years in his former band, World War Four. The red bearded force bassist alongside his young son, drummer, (and pianist) Nic Martin with the awesomely named & also red bearded guitarist, Nail, make one hell of a great sound when you put them in the same room together.
From the production value to the finer points of the linear notes and layout, Devilskin’s We Rise seems more than just their debut. This is a veteran album that speaks volumes of their capabilities. For anyone not a fan of so called ‘generic metal’ you’ll think again once you listen to this album from start to finish. The hooks, the riffs, and the oh so sweet melody punches you on every track like Surrender and the perfectly titled, Elvis Presley Circle Pit you will not be able to stop listening, and then it's finished, you’ll put it straight back to repeat.
With the success of We Rise, Devilskin have and continue to put their name of the map and any fan, old or new will be eagerly waiting for what’s next. In the meanwhile, you can catch them on tour in Australia, if you’ve just missed their NZ tour.
Devilskin formed in June 2010 in Hamilton New Zealand and features the spectacular Jennie Skulander on lead vocals. Her powerful and compelling voice and alluring stage presence sets her apart from any vocalist New Zealand has put up so far. With an unerring gift for melody, Jennie's incredible voice sweeps from whisper to roar, rips with power, drips with melody and captivates with sincerity.
Jennie previously fronted Rotorua band Slipping Tongue garnering a swathe of fans with their videos, EPs and album. Slipping Tongue also impressed many when they opened for Coheed & Cambria in 2008.
On lead guitar is Nail from the popular Waikato band Chuganaut who won the NZ Battle of the Bands and the World Battle Of The Bands in 2004. Played BDO in 2005 and opened for Iron Maiden at Mt Smart stadium in 2009. Chuganaut has played numerous national tours and released several singles, EP’s, videos and an album. Nail's searing guitar work and high energy performance bring real intensity to the live show. Nail also performs with Beckoned.
