I first saw Ezra Vine open up for Stormporter earlier this year, and I have to say, I was mesmerised. If you read that review, I gushed about his performance and how captivating he was. His use of eye contact, enthusiasm and banter to the audience, was just down right wow. Yes, I confess, I may have had a bit of a crush moment.
So, when I got the opportunity to review his Celeste EP I jumped at the chance. Great music, by a great musician, yes please!
Auckland-born, London-based, Ezra’s EP is entirely self-recorded, written and produced at his home studio. They were later embellished with the help of UK Producer Cam Blackwood who has worked with stars such as Florence + The Machine and George Ezra.
The EP opened up with Ezra’s hit song Celeste, which I am sure many people have heard, with it being TV One’s theme tune for a while. The song is named after an old sixties instrument in which he created the tune on. Celeste is an upbeat piece of music that whatever your mood, will make you feel happy and perhaps have a little dance. The video for Celeste was created by animator Rob Wallace and is definitely a wonderful piece of art in itself, so you should definitely check it out!
Second on the EP is Braver Than Most, an upbeat summer haze of a track with uplifting harmonies. This song has a wonderful folky vibe with a fabulous whistling tune that I may have annoyed my flat mate with as I have this song on repeat and singing/whistling along for a while now.
Third on the EP is Cradlesong. A beautiful contrast to the previous two tracks. It is an emotive and wonderfully composed song with emotional and vivid imagery.
He Won’t Knock shows another side of Ezra’s music composition. With it being a well written song accompanied by guitar picking. The song tells an emotive story and showcases his vocal techniques very well.
The last song on the album is a Late Night Tape Session of Marrow. A bit of a different sound to the rest of the EP, but none the less a great chilled out song.
Ezra Vine’s Celeste EP is a fantastic start to his musical career. He has created a wonderful collection of songs that have been released in perfect time for summer. These songs would be a perfect accompaniment to a chilled summer day in the sun. I cannot wait for his album to be released! Go Ezra! Woohoo!
Ezra Vine is a multi-instrumentalist obsessed with escapism, indulging his melodic fantasies among handclaps, and the waltz of bass drums.
First single Celeste, is an infectious celebration of anticipation, combining an ear-worm acoustic riff with an army of floor toms, Beach Boys backing vocals, Mike Snow piano clusters, and a lilting, Shins-like vocal.
Ezra Vine released the Celeste EP in 2014.
