The Diamond Dead - Single Review: Dumb

19 Jan 2015 // A review by Kerry MB

2015 is the start of great music already, and what better way to kick start summer than with a new single from Hawkes Bay’s finest rock-metallers, Diamond Doll. In 2013, this female fronted band released their debut EP, Plus None, a hard hitting assault of heavy noise and the perfect blend of melodic heaviness.

Diamond Doll are at it again with their latest single Dumb. The video for Dumb is a simple and perfect fit for the song. A young girl hitchhiking on rural roads, seemingly lost and full of angst and confusion. She ends up in a motel room, drinking alone. Queue black and white live images of Diamond Doll playing, with vocalist Tyley’s blood curdling screams and Livid's crashing cymbals. The girl ends up hitchhiking again as Dumb comes to an end, left wandering the desolate roads once more.

What I love about Tyley's guttural screams on Dumb, is her rawness and the heaviness she can create, while quickly retreating into melody, giving My Ruin vocalist, Tarrie B, a run for her money! Oddly enough, there is almost a child-like quality to her voice when she sings "I'm not dumb", it really has a way of adding something a little bit darker to the lyrics when you hear her vocal range. It may only be 2.27 minutes of power, but that is all that's needed, leaving you speechless and a little bit deaf in a really good way! Diamond Doll are like the New Zealand version of Canadian female fronted metallers, Kittie. Honest and raw with amazing talent and solid riffs that gives you that heart skipping moments of proudness, knowing they're Kiwis.

Diamond Doll keep making awesome music to rock out during this summer, and this single reiterates that. If you’re a fan of their music, keep your ears open as I'm sure there'll be more to come!

Shady Brain Farm - Album Review: ..Another Set Of Circumstances
26 Sep 2024 // by Kerry MB
Shady Brain Farm hail from North-West Auckland — specifically Kumeu, Waimauku, and Muriwai Beach — and has been making music together since 1997. The band, Ben Furniss lead vocals, guitar, and keyboards, Paul Taylor drums and backing vocals, and Chris Vaughan on bass and backing vocals are certainly no strangers to musical diversity and are back with a new album, ...

Hadees Drudge - Album Review: The Mind Lies When The Soul Dies
01 Aug 2024 // by Kerry MB
Hadees Drudge is quite an anomaly in Wellington’s metal scene. Forgoing a second guitarist, they proudly rock one guitar in a genre where that’s almost unheard of.

PARK RD - Album Review The Novel
23 May 2024 // by Kerry MB
It’s easy to see why Auckland five-piece, PARK RD is making some noise, figuratively and literally with their debut album, The Novel. Heavy on the indie, but far from light with solid guitar riffs and pop and funk sensibilities, PARK RD are a great example of solid musicianship.
