Moumou Timers - Album Review: Sugar Hit

28 Sep 2015 // A review by Peter-James Dries

Paekakariki; an elbow on an otherwise straight drag from here to a capital. To the outsider looking in through the rusted implements surrounding the train station, it’s a town outside of time. The kind of sleepy beach village where bands like Moumou Timers can grow, away from the bright lights and industry influence of the big cities.

The band’s latest release, Sugar Hit, is a collection of nineties rock renditions of the seventies rock n’ roll style with the occasional deviation into reggae, which like the name suggest is short and sweet. There aren’t many bands out there that sound like this, not anymore at least. A modern throwback to Fleetwood Mac.

While I’m not familiar with the band’s back catalogue, I’ve had the pleasure of checking out a couple of releases from Stefan Wolf (Bassist). While separate entities, there are similarities between Wolf’s work, specifically on Quiet! Can’t You See I’m Dying Here, and the songs on Sugar Hit. Both have the feel of people making music for fun and the musical aptitude to pull it off.

The songs on Sugar Hit feel more like a garage band jamming than something formulated then reconstructed and it’s that perceived authenticity, the personal flourishes and their service with a smile that raises Moumou Timers above your run-of-the-mill garage band.

Check out the Moumou Timers Facebook Page for details on where to find Sugar Hit.

Ra Charmian - Album Review: Waiata Wairua
08 Oct 2024 // by Peter-James Dries
Waiata Wairua is an album that wouldn’t feel out of place performed in a late night jazz hall in some alternate history where the successes of the Maori battalion lead to a proliferation of Te Reo worldwide. The sort of interest that saw your dad singing in French in the 60's, when Mireille Mathieu was knocking about.

Yurt Party - Album Review: Yurt Party
07 Sep 2023 // by Peter-James Dries
It sure isn't summer, and this is really not the Balkans, but Yurt Party’s new self-titled album refutes that. Back with another one of them Balkan rocking beats, Yurt Party’s debut is jazzy, erratic, and full of zest and energetic grooves, with flavour notes of ska, dub, and bergamot.

I’m too old for this world. We’ve devolved to the point where music is only as good as the soundtrack to your 10 second TikTok, and the thirty thousand copies recycling the idea.
