As soon as she casually walked out of the audience and on to the stage at the beginning of her set, I had the distinct feeling that this is gig was going to set a high bar.
It was obvious from the first song that the effortless integrity that Lisa Crawley exudes live, is a phenomena unto itself.
There is an energy to her performance that paints of restraint to a masterful degree, as if she feels every song so intensely that she is about to burst out of her skin and yet, just manages not to.
She addressed the audience as if we were all old friends and maintained a seamless flow between songs, imparting stories about crappy patrons from her Wellington tour venue and Miss Teen Waitakere contests. She’s quick with quips, feeding off of the audience so well it bridges on feeling rehearsed.
Her backing band were tight and obviously practiced in the progression and tone of her live shows. They feed off of each other well and were masterfully cohesive.
It was truly a pleasure to see Crawley finish the show playing through her new Up In The Air EP and overall, this show is on par for the best live show I’ve seen this year, and definitely the best live gig I’ve seen by a Kiwi artist in a long time.
