Super Narco Man - EP Review: Dank Mammoth

18 Mar 2016 // A review by LilMizCharlie

Will in all instances cause stereos to malfunction...

Maybe I was just in the mood for some rough as guts, raw, sweat drenched madness. This is my first review ever and I must confess, I was drawn to everything about this band. On first listen they reminded me of the post hardcore band At The Drive In although personally I think in moments they have the potential to be far more gutsy and underground.

When I saw the name Super Narco Man looking for someone to review their album Dank Mammoth, I became intrigued and I couldn’t pass it up. The thing I love most about this recording is it has been unashamedly recorded at home, in a lounge. It’s raw and it feels like I’m sitting on a student flat sofa, with mates, some cody’s and zoning out to a jam session. I know this will not be for everybody, I don’t care. Super Narco Man don’t either. The album consists of 7 live songs on Bandcamp, go and listen.

My only wish if anything would be to hear the lyrics. Unfortunately the mix made it hard for me to determine what any of these songs are about. Don’t let this deter you though because for a three piece, Joel (guitar, vocals), Matt (bass, backing vocals) and Rik (drums, backing vocals) have some very heavy, hard hitting, indie rock going on in this little gem. There is something I truly love about being Rock n Roll, pulling together a bit of gear and pushing play.

My personal favourite based on sound, would have to be Dick Noise. The feedback at the start is crazy insane. Then it goes into post hardcore overdrive that makes me wanna staunch every mother sucker, his dog, mum and his sister out. It’s raw and aggressive, it reminds me a lot of Wellington band, Hollywoodfun Downstairs. Then of course there is Total Disdain where from 2:35ish onwards, the guys take you to a grunge zone and Joel does this madly epic lead outro. It leaves you feeling like Joel has gone into his own world and never intends on coming back to reality. Total Disdain made me wanna create my own circle pit in the lounge.

I look forward to seeing the evolution of this band.

Jayson Norris - EP Review: Eroded
29 Sep 2016 // by LilMizCharlie
There is something delightfully soothing yet sea-stormy about Adventure It Seems Is Easy from Jayson Norris' new EP Eroded. I found myself listening to this as “cool down” music at the gym.

I have often been in awe over Hollie Smith’s tracks. Her voice comes across as humble yet commanding and at those precious moments, heart-wrenching.

Karl, my partner in crime, and I decided to go and see what all the fuss was about with Homegrown. Over the years, I had musical projects on myself so this was something I often couldn’t afford to throw in the mix.
