Karl Jensen - Album Review: Flee the Ground
Flee the Ground is a bag of bitter-sweet bon-bons, each with their own flavour, but all with the same taste.
Karl Jensen’s style is a semi-psychedelic, Bowie meets Nick Cave affair. All that crooning and all that swagger. Indie at its finest.
Expect melancholy, mirth, nostalgia, ambivalence and other ambiguous feelings in a nearly acoustic, almost rock style. It’s music for a dim-lit room, while wearing dark sunglasses.
Flee the Ground bears all the hallmarks of a multi-instrumentalist at work; the consistent style and tone, the attention to detail, the layers upon layers. All the things sacrificed when you have four band members trying to drive the tour bus home.
Jensen is obviously one of those restless artists who sweat out creativity. You probably haven’t heard of him yet. But you need to. He’s one of those underground artists that deserve a lot more attention.
Crazy was the stand out track for me. Of all the hooks, that was the earworm. In close second was the track Suicide, which would be my favourite if it wasn’t for my personal sensitivity to the issue, even though the song is performed with tongue firmly in cheek.
