Rebel Sound Radio are a Heavy Rock band who hail from Hamilton and is a 3 piece made up of Jessie James (guitar, vocals) Craig (bass) and Ashley (drums). I was surprised to learn they were a 3 piece, as I had listened to the EP a few times before reading into what they had previously done – their music sounds so much louder and heavier than what you would expect a 3 piece to have. As their Amplifier page says …“Rebel Sound Radio are a collective of like minded individuals unified by high volume, high energy and an unrelenting drive to break away from the everyday grind… In Rebel Sound Radio you will find a band that is not interested in playing it safe… They speak their mind, question everything, give it all and don’t hold anything back… Bringing a fresh sound with their unique blend of rock, this three piece sounds relentless, wild and untamed.”..
I had to include this quote because after listening to the EP as many times as I have this is the EXACT picture I had in my mind. They are definitely a band that has its own unique sound in a genre where bands tend to sound similar and often regurgitate the same equation of song writing. Rebel Sound Radio most definitely have their own unique twist on this formula which is anything but similar or regurgitated.
The Regret Nothing EP came out on the 21st of October and is available from iTunes and the band. Right from the first droney fast, distorted guitar solo in Forgotten it has me hooked. This EP is reminiscent of summer road trips with good friends with everyone singing along at the top of their lungs (and I’m sure this will be an EP that will accompany many Kiwis on their road trips this summer). The EP has so many different influences and I can hear so many great bands reflected, such as The Sex Pistols, The Doors, Guns n Roses to name a few, but every time you hear one of these influences Rebel Sound Radio’s own sound takes back over.
I love the use of gang vocals on this album, it adds more depth to the songs they are featured on and are part of the reason I thought this was a 5 piece act when I first listened to the EP. I love how the songs all have different introductions with solos from each of the band members. My personal favourite intro to a song is Welcome to the Badlands – with one of the greatest rock bass intros I’ve heard on a song in a very long time. I can see why they choose this song – it is a perfect blend of the 3 instruments, without the guitars being over powering which can tend to happen in Rock.
This piece of work is very well produced – and their energy and power is portrayed in every second of this recording. If you haven’t checked out Rebel Sound Radio yet, they are hitting the road with Poison Skies over November with five dates from Wellington to Auckland. Make sure you check them out and grab a copy of their EP when you do!
Rebel Sound Radio were formed early 2015 in Hamilton New Zealand, a sleepy riverside city that has given birth to some of New Zealands biggest artists.
As both their previous bands had called it a day, a conscious decision was made by singer / guitarist / songwriter Jessie James Hanright and bass player Craig Turner to start something new and to bring a totally different sound that would set them apart.
They enlisted the help of drummer Ashley Goodare to complete the wild, untamed, three piece and set up shop writing and molding their new found rock and roll sound.
