Bonfire Baby - EP Review: Bonfire Baby
Running out to the car, late as usual, I checked the
letterbox on the way through, finding this wee gem in there. I was off on a road trip with no-one, giving
me plenty of time to conceive the following words that will explain my
experience with Bonfire Baby.
The first track, La Niña, is a super cute and laid back song that has been rubbed generously on Chris Isaak, soaking in that flavour and essence and combining it with a cheerful contrast.
Close your eyes now, and imagine if Kings of Leon were a roaming camel, go on. Gone Crazy has delightfully pleasant similarities. You’ll hear when you listen, it’s the rolling groove and the distant vocals. The songs on the disc boast variety in tone and vocals, making it an easy repeated listen, and this song is demonstrative of that.
Dirty Skirt Blues surprised me with a midpoint breakdown, not one like Lamb of God, a gentle and sweet one, I going right ahead and saying it’s like the aural version of a lava lamp. One thing I really like about this cohesive collection of tracks is that every piece with the songs are thoughtfully placed.
Cheekily composed and arranged, these songs are happy and uplifting, with the tiniest hint of an innocent type of seduction. Production wise, there is something so utterly charming in the tones selected for this album. Guitar tones like treasures washed up on a beach and a bucket like snare join forces to present a gorgeous and endearing overall product.
Like pairing a merlot with roast lamb, this album is meant for the upcoming sunny days. Hunt out a copy and support NZ music.
