Thomas Brothers - Album Review: Thomas Brothers

30 Nov 2016 // A review by Momoko.B

New Zealand has been legendary for having sibling-based bands, with the likes of prolific musicians The Finn Brothers way back and more recently The Nielson Brothers.

And as 2016 comes to a close, it seems like a new set of brothers is taking New Zealand’s Indie-Pop scene by storm: The Thomas Brothers.

Four siblings make up The Thomas Brothers, and after 4 years of incredibly hard work, they’ve released their self-titled album for us all to enjoy.

The album contains 12 tracks, all heavily laced with lyrics about love and lost, creating a sad atmosphere that ties in perfectly with their epic-sounding melodies and powerful vocals.

The album starts off with a song that verges onto heavy rock, You’ll Be My Lover, and from there the album transitions sharply into slower songs with rich piano riffs and heart wrenching lyrics.

Every song on the album contains piano riffs that tie in with the various sounds of echoey guitar solos and heavy bass drum, that invokes a feeling of both sadness and beauty.

And tying all the sounds together are the sweet vocals of Samuel Thomas which magnify and carry the entire album into a whole new sphere of music.

Similar to the likes of Coldplay and Muse, their 4 years of working on this album has definitely paid off, and The Thomas Brothers are taking Indie-Pop into a whole realm of music - One that will lead other artists by the hand, and one that will ensure an astounding music career for this band of brothers.

About Thomas Brothers

The Thomas Brothers really are a band of brothers. Consisting of four siblings, Sam, Josh, Joe and Ben, here’s what you need to know about the brothers in one paragraph:

Samuel - the Go-Getta. Fun fact he studied acting at Australia’s most prestigious drama school and wrote, created and acted in his own feature film Someone To Carry Me. Guess who wrote the score!; Josh - the self-described geek. He’s the one in the band who enjoys computer technology. Sam writes the songs and Josh makes them great! Joe - the Lady’s Favourite. Constantly teased about his good looks, but his personality is his real hidden talent. Fun fact: Joe worked on Planet of the Apes… and Ben - the talented one. Drums, piano, guitar, vocals - he can pick up any instrument and master it. Speaking of pickups, he’s played competitive basketball in America.

The Thomas Brothers have been playing music together since before they could walk. They released their debut self-titled album in 2016, featuring the song I Need To Get Home. They followed up with several singles in 2019, leading up to the release of their sophomore studio album: Together in 2020, featuring the track Sorry.

Albi & The Wolves - Album Review: One Eye Open
06 Dec 2016 // by Momoko.B
In bustling cities and the ever-changing world of westernization and gentrification, we often find ourselves too caught up in time, unable to appreciate the more peaceful moments in life. Well, it just so happened that it was luckily a sunny day on Auckland's west coast, when I decided to listen to an album that seemed to slow down time itself and allowed me to fully immerse myself in the nature around me.

It was a stressful week in the life of a student, studying for exams, earning enough to stay anchored in the big smoke. When Sunday rolled around and the time came to finally relax, some dream-like tones were needed to smile, sit back, and relax.
