Back in 2014, we saw the emergence of conceptual prog-rock/metal instrumental EP Empty House by Auckland artist/producer Luke Finlay. Just when you thought he wasn't serious, King Fin is back at it again. Ready to take on the new year with this surprise release said to be off his upcoming album in 2017.
Re-branded with some nostalgic artwork we are invited into the song by a palisade of barnyard funk that consists of some crazy drum and bass work slathered with country-style guitar licks. Enough to get anyone out of their seat and slapping a knee.
Taking off unexpectedly with a strange yet fantastic lead section that transforms the track from a normal elevator, into a musical joyride. The instrumentation is uncanny when it comes to speed and accuracy with a perfect range of guitar tones, backed by pounding drum beats and insane bass lines.
Besides the higher production quality and the additional instruments, we can already hear a massive change in tact compared to the previous EP. An appropriate blend of the new, and old school, all rolled up into four and a half minutes of funk.
Fast paced and colourful with hints of folk and jazz that take me back to the Primus days. An epic transition into the new species of sound that I look forward to hearing from this artist very soon.

King Fin is the love child of Audio Engineer/Guitarist Luke Finlay, drawing influence from but not limited to King Crimson, Steven Wilson, Toe, Kimbra. King Fin has a strong emphasis on a Funk & Progressive style of music, protruding from his fingertips you’ll find King Fin displays licks that’ll make you question how many fingers he has, time changes that’ll make you question reality & beats that’ll make your head bop along until you have a neck as long as a giraffe.
