Mishap - Gig Review: Mishap @ Thistle Hall, Wellington - 2/09/2017

04 Sep 2017 // A review by tonymcdonald

As soon as Mishap hit the stage, it became obvious as to their status of local heroes, quickly smashing into The Scrumpy Song with the majority of the crowd singing along.

This definitely felt like the most active fan base I've seen for a local group, even asking for an encore. This was something I wasn't expecting the band to deliver on, but I was happily surprised at their cover of Green Day's Basket Case. There was a lack of material from their latest EP Not Feeling This but I can't help but feel that this is a nod back to the Toaster EP, which is where the original Hey, Allie! single was recorded. A personal highlight would have to be when a member of the crowd was pulled up during their first EP's self titled track to do vocals alongside the rest of the band. Great to see that kind of interaction with your fan base, not to mention that it felt like the most energetic track of the night.

Mishap's tour isn't quite over, with gigs in Christchurch, Dunedin and Levin, you definitely won't want to miss the awesome show this Wellington based pop-punk group has to offer.

About Mishap

Mishap are a pop-punk trio from Wellington, formed in March 2016. They have a style that is somewhere between the simple, raw sound of 90s Green Day and Blink-182 and the tight, modern sound of bands such as The Story So Far, Neck Deep and State Champs.

In 2016, Mishap released their debut EP, Toaster with most popular tracks being Hey Allie and The Scrumpy Song. On these songs, Mishap have made a name for themselves among the New Zealand rock community, touring exhaustively around the North Island.

For Mishap, 2017 held the release of their second EP, Not Feeling This, two fully funded music videos and touring with pop punk pals Fire For Glory, Braves, Lookin Up, Barracks and heaps of other rad bands! Their first (professional) music video was released on the 16th of March for their single/title track of Not Feeling This.

In the sweaty snake pit that is Valhalla I was ordering a Fireball when two feet appeared next to me at the bar. Looking up I discover it’s the one and only Jared from Dead Favours.

27 Feb 2021 // by tonymcdonald
New Zealand’s very own Blink 182, Elemeno P, with support from Fruit Juice Parade and Valentina hit San Fran, on a fantastic warm Wellington evening. It was packed out; beers were flowing, and the sticky smell of the low-ceilinged venue was absolutely buzzing.

Even during a period of uncertainty in New Zealand with Covid-19, Devilskin and support act Shepherds Reign managed to fill San Francisco Bath House in Wellington. In fact, I have not seen a queue outside on the street for quite some time.
