Jed Parsons - Single Review: Get Lost

Get Lost is the debut single from Jed Parsons, and makes a heck of an introduction. Composed of an almost mediocre arrangement that has had dissonance and discord purposefully inserted into it, to present a juxtaposition of the normal and the fantasy. Instrumentally, the track is ambitious and exciting, with a high tempo and multiple layers that create a beautiful sense of coordinated havoc.
The track is reminiscent of the playful nature of Goodshirt's debut single Green, and has a similarly creative video that is incredibly entertaining to watch.
Get Lost exemplifies the excitement that we want in our lives and is incredibly addictive. The positive nature of the track and the mirroring of the vocal notes and instruments get it stuck in your head; not in a "this song is annoying" kind of way, but an "I want to listen to that song again" manner.
I love heavy rock. I did not expect this to have such an effect. I want to hear more of this. That is the downside of a great debut single; you have to wait to hear more.

About Jed Parsons
Through his success in Mike Chunn’s national secondary school song writing competition in 2010 (Play It Strange), Parsons met with some of Christchurch’s most well renowned musicians (the roots of a creative collective now known as ‘Fledge’) including Ben Campbell (Zed, Atlas, All My Brothers), Moses Robbins (Atlas, All My Brothers) and Kurt Preston (Superfood), who went on to form a hard-hitting rock band with Parsons called House Of Mountain. Within 18 months of their formation, the group had played over 70 shows together, touring extensively around the South Island of New Zealand, and as far away as the Philippines.
The boys also play as the backing bands for both acts Happiness Stan and Hera – both extremely talented singer/songwriters from Christchurch and the Fledge crew, and both of whom Parsons has recently been collaborating with as an acoustic trio.

With no warning given, You Maintain The Stain gets straight into cold, apathetic vocals alongside a pluggy bassline, until the guitar jumps in with an uncomfortable level of discord that sows the seeds of uneasiness in the pit of your stomach as if every instrument is performing a different song.
