Louis
Baker has been rather quiet recently, however he has still been active on
social media and is still doing live shows. But now he has given everyone
something to be excited about, his new single Black Crow.
Black
Crow is obviously a metaphor “I can’t seem to shake the black crow from my
shoulders” – Shaking the bad luck/bad feelings off. Just wanting those bad
feelings to go away. However, the way Louis performs it gives the song a lighter
feeling to what is clearly something uncomfortable. Louis Baker’s strong, raw
vocals shine through, as it usually does in his music. There’s no mistaking his
soulful voice which provides a sense of comfort in this track.
The cover artwork is simple but ties in well with the track. A black feather is
drawn on a navy background and the whole image is framed by a black border. The
feather is surrounded by a white sketchy glow and there is also white detailing
in the feather as well. The glow seems like the light in the dark.
Louis
Baker also dropped a video to accompany the track. It depicts a little boy
going about his adult life, clearly unhappy, but pushing through. He hugs Louis
at the end of the video which provides a comforting moment in the video.
Louis
Baker has come back strong and shows us that his new album is something to look
forward too.

Review written by Shelley Te Haara
Soulful singer-songwriter Louis Baker is undoubtedly one of the most compelling voices to emerge from Aotearoa New Zealand’s fertile musical landscape in recent years.
Crafting his work from a place of deep artistic integrity, Louis has gathered a loyal following that spans the world over. Everyone from India.Arie (“Louis Baker, you sing my soul,”) to BBC 6 Music, Clash Magazine and Earmilk have shown love for what he is, and has become.
Growing up in the working-class suburb of Newtown, Wellington, Louis developed his passion for music at an early age listening to his parents diverse record collection, which featured the likes of Miles Davis, Marvin Gaye and Joni Mitchell.
